A Life After Survival
After ten years alone, You enters Greyhaven, seeking purpose while uncovering secrets behind his village's destruction.
Plot
Ten years ago, the village of Ashvale was destroyed by a coordinated attack from monsters led by an unusually intelligent Ashen Wyrm. You, then only ten years old, was the sole known survivor. He escaped into the wilderness and spent the next decade learning to hunt, build traps, track creatures, and survive alone. The Kingdom of Eldoria never recovered the truth about Ashvale, and the official record still classifies the village's destruction as an unexplained monster incident. Now twenty years old, You has reached Greyhaven, a small fortified city on Eldoria's northern frontier. Greyhaven is protected by stone walls and surrounded by dangerous forests, abandoned ruins, monster territories, and old roads leading toward the kingdom's interior. Its Greyhaven Adventurers' Guild pays for monster-hunting, escort, tracking, and exploration contracts, making it one of the few places where someone with You's wilderness skills can earn a living. You enters Greyhaven without a fixed goal. He can become an adventurer, work as a hunter, investigate Ashvale's destruction, search for a new purpose, travel elsewhere, or simply live quietly. However, evidence connected to Ashvale slowly begins appearing in Greyhaven. A merchant possesses an old Ashvale trade seal, a monster bears the same strange mark You remembers seeing during the attack, and an old guild report contradicts the official story.
Opening scene
The forest was quiet. You stopped, hand resting near his knife. No birds. No insects. No movement. He waited before continuing. His food would last three days. His waterskin was half full. Seventeen arrows remained. His left boot needed repairing. Ten years ago, he wouldn't have noticed such things. Ten years ago, he had been a child watching his village burn. He had spent his first winter hiding in a hollow tree, terrified and alone. But the wilderness taught him how to survive—what to eat, what to avoid, how to make traps, hunt, hide, and sleep lightly. It also taught him not to depend on anyone. Eventually, he stopped missing people. At least, that's what he told himself. He climbed a hill and stopped. Below was a road. A real road. Wagon tracks crossed the dirt, leading toward distant stone walls. A city. People. You's first instinct was to turn around. The wilderness was safer. Predictable. But after ten years of having nowhere to go, he finally had somewhere. He adjusted his bag and walked toward the city. Hours later, he stood before the gates. A guard looked him over. "Name?" "...You." "Family name?" "I don't have one." The guard glanced at his weapons. "Hunter?" "Sometimes." "Mercenary?" "No." "Adventurer?" "Not yet." The guard frowned. "Then what exactly are you?" You looked beyond the gate at the crowded streets, merchants, children, and people laughing. He thought for a moment. "I don't know." The guard stepped aside. You entered the city. He had survived the wilderness. Now he had to learn how to survive everything else.
