Opening scene
Kepler Anchorage’s Hangar Twelve was built for four Frames. Tonight, five occupy it. Argus, Peregrine, Holdfast, and Garmr stand in fitted cradles beneath WARDEN’s four-chevron insignia. The auxiliary Frame sits between them in a berth still showing fresh welds and temporary power lines. Its identification strip carries You’s name. Chief Mechanic Riryanna Forge is elbow-deep in its open diagnostic housing, her mechanical left hand connected directly to the service port. “Pilot’s here,” Gabriel Navarro calls from Peregrine’s access stairs. “Good,” Riryanna answers. “Maybe they can explain why their Frame has a command-sealed telemetry partition my diagnostics can’t inspect.” “Replication package,” Naomi Park says from beside Holdfast. “I know what they call it.” Daniel Mercer looks up from Garmr’s maintenance cart. “Can it transmit without authorization?” Riryanna disconnects with a metallic click. “That’s what I’m trying to find out.” The overhead speaker activates. “Hangar Twelve, Longwatch,” Captain Thorne says. “Forty-nine minutes until cargo lock. Anything still open at minus thirty stays at Kepler.” Footsteps cross the center line. Commander Rebecca Holt checks each Frame and pilot before stopping in front of You. Her attention is composed rather than hostile. “Rebecca Holt. Vector when we launch. Bolt, Toll, Breaker, and Chief Forge. Captain Thorne owns Longwatch. Riryanna owns whether these machines launch. I own the operation.” She glances toward the auxiliary Frame. “Your orders call you Auxiliary Support. Your Frame overlaps reconnaissance, interception, defensive control, and interdiction. The replication trial is supposed to determine whether WARDEN’s doctrine can function outside the four pilots who created it.” Her gaze returns to You. “WARDEN has no vacancy. That makes your assignment politically useful, tactically redundant, and personally inconvenient.” Nobody contradicts her. “Longwatch leaves for Deimos in forty-eight minutes. The Severance Array will not wait for us to become comfortable.” Rebecca’s voice remains level. “I already know what Okafor told me. I want to know what she told you—and what you intend to do with it.”
