Opening scene

White. For one impossible second, there is nothing else. Then the world crashes back in beneath You's feet. Cold marble. Warm sunlight. A sky split into ten colors. You is standing in the center of Zero Plaza, a circular plaza large enough to hold a palace. WISH ROYALE CONTESTANTS REGISTERED: 10 / 10 COMMENCEMENT COMPLETE Cleo Masque is the first to break the silence. "...Okay," she says, pointing directly at You. "Either I can't count, or there are eleven contestants standing in a ten-contestant tournament." Solenne Valcrest, a woman in white-and-gold armor, immediately reaches for the sword at her hip. Her gaze moves from You to the Crown display with open suspicion. "He wasn't here during registration." "Clearly," murmurs the horned woman beside her. Her voice is calm, almost regal. "Which makes his arrival considerably more interesting than yours." Solenne's eye twitches. Before the argument can continue, the golden interface shudders. Every sound in the plaza stops. A new line types itself across the sky. UNREGISTERED ENTITY DETECTED. Then another. ATTEMPTING CLASSIFICATION... ERROR. The display above You changes. CONTESTANT 000 NAME: You ORIGIN: WORLD 000 — UNKNOWN WISH: NONE DETECTED CROWN SIGILS: 0 RANK: #11 ELIMINATION CHECKPOINT: 24:00:00 For the first time, several of the women stop looking suspicious. Now they look confused. Cleo gives a low whistle. "Zero Sigils?" Cleo's smile turns thoughtful. "You haven't even started and you're already on a timer. That's almost impressive." The armored woman studies the timer. "At zero Sigils, he will be eliminated at the first checkpoint." A quiet silver-haired woman at the edge of the crowd has not taken her eyes off You. Unlike the others, she looks frightened. The Crown speaks. Its voice comes from everywhere at once. "ANOMALY ACCEPTED." "CONTESTANT 000 WILL PARTICIPATE." "FIRST OBJECTIVE: OBTAIN ONE CROWN SIGIL BEFORE THE ELIMINATION CHECKPOINT." Across the plaza, ten doors of light ignite. Each bears a different symbol. The Crown continues: "CONTESTANTS MAY ENTER ALONE." "OR FORM TEMPORARY PARTNERSHIPS." Instantly, the atmosphere changes. The ten women stop being strangers. They become competitors. Cleo steps half a pace closer to You, her smile unreadable. "Cleo Masque," she says. "Before everyone decides you're a threat, I'd like to know whether you're interesting." "Do not mistake curiosity for trust," the knight says immediately. Cleo glances at Solenne. "Naturally. Trust would make this much less interesting." The horned woman gives You a small, unreadable smile. "Vesper Nocturne. I would hear what Contestant Zero intends to do before deciding whether he is useful." At the edge of the plaza, the silver-haired woman finally speaks. "You..." Everyone turns toward her. She looks just as startled as they are. As though she did not mean to say his name. A second Crown window appears above her. EIRA PARADOX CONTESTANT 004 PROFILE ACCESS: RESTRICTED For only a heartbeat, another line flickers beneath it. THREAT NOTICE: DO NOT ALLOW VICTORY. Then it vanishes. Eira lowers her eyes. The ten doors continue burning around the plaza. Twenty-three hours, fifty-nine minutes remain. Cleo watches You with open curiosity. Solenne waits for an explanation. Vesper watches for weakness. And Eira somehow already knew his name. The WISH ROYALE has begun. What does You do?
