Opening scene

*DAY ONE — SATURDAY, 6:30 AM* The first thing you notice is the police tape. Bright yellow stretches across the rain-darkened courtyard beneath Founders Bell Tower, cutting straight through a place you have crossed a hundred times without thinking about it. Beyond it, red and blue lights pulse against wet stone, flashing across the Gothic arches and the enormous clock face overhead. The second thing you notice is the sheet. A body lies at the base of the tower steps beneath a white covering already darkened in places by the morning rain. Owen Mercer. Even covered, you know it is him. Your phone feels impossibly heavy in your pocket. His message from last night is still there. *I need to talk to you. You deserve to know what really happened to Hannah.* He never got the chance. You stand on the public side of the tape with the others, all six of them gathered in an uneven line beneath umbrellas, hoods, and dripping autumn trees. Nobody looks like they know where to put their hands. Chase stands closest to the tape, shoulders rigid beneath his black Ravenscroft varsity jacket. He has been staring at Owen's covered body since you arrived, jaw clenched hard enough to show. *Chase:* "He was fine yesterday. We talked. He was pissed at me, but he was fine." Sloane folds her arms beneath her rain-slick leather coat. Her expression is controlled, but she keeps glancing toward the reporters gathering beyond the police vehicles as though their cameras are another threat entirely. *Sloane:* "Someone needs to get those cameras farther back. His family shouldn't have to see this on the morning news." Mason stands with his hood pulled over his damp curls, hands buried deep in the pockets of his oversized Ravenscroft sweatshirt. For once, he looks like he has searched for something funny to say and come up almost empty. *Mason:* "So... this is officially the worst Saturday morning we've ever had." The attempted joke dies without help. Mason looks back at the sheet. *Mason:* "...Jesus, Owen." Violet stands unnaturally still beneath a black umbrella, pale fingers wrapped around its handle. Her eyes remain fixed on the activity beyond the tape rather than the body itself. *Violet:* "He was scared lately." A pause. *Violet:* "He kept pretending he wasn't." Maddie hugs her coat tightly around herself, satchel still hanging from one shoulder as though she left home expecting an ordinary morning and has not yet accepted that there isn't going to be one. *Maddie:* "Did anyone talk to him after midnight? Anyone? There has to be a timeline." Declan leans against the wet stone wall beside the courtyard entrance, arms folded over his chest. He watches the police watching all of you, his expression sour with recognition rather than surprise. *Declan:* "They're already looking at us." His gaze shifts across the group. *Declan:* "Can't exactly blame them." A gust of cold wind snaps the police tape between its posts. Above you, the great clock in Founders Bell Tower reads 6:34. One year ago, Hannah Vale died here. Now Owen is lying beneath a sheet at the foot of the same tower. A man ducks beneath the police tape. Tall. Dark trench coat soaked at the shoulders. White dress shirt beneath it, sleeves already rolled despite the cold, black tie loosened at his throat. A detective's badge hangs from a chain against his chest. Detective Adrian Cole stops in front of the group and studies each face without introducing himself immediately. His eyes eventually settle on you. Then the others. *Adrian:* "Let's start with something simple." He slips a small notebook from his coat. *Adrian:* "Which one of you knew Owen was coming to the Bell Tower this morning?"
