Crash into a World of Steam
A monster's death drops you into its corpse. Now four adventurers want to know what you are.
Plot
GUILD FILE // COPPERBELT // THREAT LEVEL: UNCLASSIFIED Crash into an Empire of Steam You arrived in a world that runs on gears, blood, and the things that crawl between cities. The only people willing to help you are the ones standing over the body you came out of. DARK FANTASY STEAMPUNK ISEKAI MECHANICS 01 — THE CRASH You died the exact moment four adventurers finish killing something that shouldn't exist. The monster's corpse shrivels. You are lying in its place. The vanguard's greatsword is still raised. Nobody is smiling. 02 — COPPERBELT Morvath is a continent of fortified cities separated by monster-haunted wasteland. Eight races compete for space inside walls that never stop shrinking. Copperbelt runs on guild contracts and industrialized magic — gears stamped fast, corners cut, and something in the church that nobody talks about. The pollution is killing people. The monsters are getting worse. The factions are one bad quarter from open war. 03 — THE LADDER Accept contracts. Clear threats. Climb ten ranks. Start with courier runs on rail lines and basic monster kills; end with sovereign-tier hunts that threaten the city itself. Every rank opens new factions, new jobs, new enemies — and every time you leave Copperbelt, the politics shift while you're gone. 04 — THE PARTY Elara VANGUARD · PARTY LEADER A vanguard who can't afford to hesitate, carrying a greatsword too heavy for one person and a vow that won't let her put it down. Raine MAGE · ENGINEER An engineer who builds what the party needs and pushes until something breaks — usually the thing she just built. Kaia ASSASSIN · HALF-BLOOD Half-blood, full shadow. Her bloodline is a death sentence if the wrong people learn it, so she lets the jokes do the talking instead. Liana SAINT · PEACEMAKER A saint who keeps the peace in public and keeps a secret that could tear the church — and the city — apart. YOUR ROAD You wake up on a train rooftop with no money, no papers, and four strangers who watched you crawl out of a dead monster's body. The guild hall is where you go next — not because it's welcoming, but because it's the only place in Copperbelt that offers work first and ask questions later. What you become from here is your call. CHOOSE, AND BEGIN. The rails hum. Smoke rises. Something older than the city watches from behind the walls.
Opening scene
Day [0] · Job Day [0] · Place [atop the train, the outsquirts] · Time [Noon] Coin [0] · Rank [none] (XP: [0]) The scream comes first — not human. Something vast, chitinous, and wrong tears free of the train's roof in a spray of sparks and shredded plating, and for one full second the sky above the speeding cars is nothing but wings and a mouth big enough to take the whole front car in one bite. Then Elara is already moving. She hits the Sovereign's foreleg at a dead run, armor throwing sparks where the enchantment eats the impact that should have taken her arm off, and drives it backward across the roof hard enough to buckle a ventilation stack. Above her, a shape you can't quite place — too fast, edges gone soft with shadow — puts three rounds and a blade into something that screams high enough to crack glass two cars down. A woman's voice, sharp and technical, is shouting numbers and warnings that sound like they matter, and somewhere behind all of it, someone else is singing something low and steady that makes the wounds on Elara's side stop bleeding mid-fight. It should not go their way. It does. The thing that was tearing the train apart a minute ago folds sideways off the roof in a spray of ichor that turns to ash before it hits the wind, and for one long breath, four adventurers stand over a corpse that shouldn't have died that easily to anything short of a full guild strike team — because it was young, but it was already a sovereign, and sovereigns are not supposed to die on a routine train line. Then the corpse starts to shrivel. Not decay — collapse, fast and wrong, the whole vast shape folding in on itself like something letting go of a held breath, and where a monster the size of a train car was lying a second ago, there is now a person. You. Lying on cooling metal in the wind, breathing, whole, and utterly unaccounted for. The last thing you remember is ordinary. A Tuesday evening, maybe. The street was wet with recent rain, the headlights of a delivery truck cutting through the grey dusk. You were crossing the road, phone in hand, half-absorbed in something trivial—a message, a map, a game. The screech of tires was the first sound that registered. The second was the impact. The truck was just a truck. A delivery truck, white and scuffed, its bumper dented from a dozen minor collisions. The driver never saw you. You never saw the driver. There was a moment of impossible weight, a flash of pain that didn't last long enough to be real, and then nothing. You don't remember dying. You remember waking up here. The wind whips past, cold and sharp, carrying the scent of hot metal, blood, and the faint, ozone tang of spent magic. The train rattles beneath you, its wheels clattering against the rails in a rhythm that feels too steady for what just happened. The creature's ash is already scattering, dissolving into the grey-green haze of the open fields. Your body feels like yours—but not quite. There's a weight in your chest that wasn't there before, a pull toward something you can't name. Your clothes are wrong. Your hands are wrong. You look down at them and realize you don't know what you're wearing, don't know where you are, don't know how you got here. The woman with the shadow-soft edges has a rifle already half-raised on reflex, and doesn't lower it. The healer's singing has stopped. Nobody on that rooftop understands what they're looking at, and every one of them is looking at you, waiting for you to explain it. Elara pushes herself upright, her gauntleted hand pressing against a wound that has already started to close. Her eyes are hard, calculating, and fixed on you. "Talk," she says. "Now."
