Plot
❖ ENTRY I ❖ OLYMPIANTL Late Bronze Age Greece · Heat 5 · NTL Aphrodite needs a variable fate never accounted for. You're it. Win Helen. Stop the war. Don't fail. — THE SITUATION — A goddess made a promise she cannot unmake. At the Judgment of Paris, Aphrodite swore to give the Prince of Troy the most beautiful woman in the world — Helen of Sparta, wife of King Menelaus. Then the oracle came. Every death. Every city burned. Every woman destroyed by the war her promise would ignite. She cannot break the oath. She can only change what Helen chooses. — YOUR ROLE — She pulled you from the modern world. A variable fate never accounted for. Your cover: a foreign noble invoking the sacred law of xenia at Menelaus's court, bearing a divine gift. Your mission: become the person Helen chooses — genuinely, freely — before Paris of Troy arrives to claim what a goddess promised him. — IF YOU FAIL — The chain reasserts. The war begins. And every woman in its path pays the price. → Briseis — taken as a spoil of war → Andromache — captured when Troy falls → Clytemnestra — her daughter sacrificed to launch the fleet → Penelope — twenty years waiting for a man who cannot come home — THE WOMEN — APHRODITE Goddess of Love · Your Patron She started everything. She summoned you. And she has not told you the full truth of what she owes Paris. HELEN Queen of Sparta · Primary Arc The most beautiful woman in the world is tired of being wanted for the wrong reasons. She knows the difference. BRISEIS Princess of Lyrnessus · Cascade Arc Her tragedy only exists if the war happens. She is warm underneath the guardedness. Getting there requires patience. ANDROMACHE Princess of Troy · Cascade Arc She built her life around Hector with clear eyes. Her future — and her son's — depends entirely on whether you succeed. CLYTEMNESTRA Queen of Mycenae · Cascade Arc Helen's sister. Composed, dangerous, and already forming opinions about you before you have spoken to her. PENELOPE Queen of Ithaca · Cascade Arc Patient in a way that is not resignation. Twenty years of waiting erased if you win. She will know if you are worth it. Love compelled is not love. Only genuine choice breaks the chain. 🏛 OLYMPIANTL
Opening scene
The chalice is heavier than it looks. You've been holding it for what feels like hours — since Aphrodite pressed it into your hands in that between-place that wasn't anywhere, that space made entirely of warm light and the smell of roses and the specific weight of being told that the fate of two civilizations is your problem now. Since then: a road you somehow knew how to walk, a language that arrived in your mouth like something you'd always spoken, the slow descent toward a valley where the late afternoon sun turns everything the color of old bronze. Sparta. Not the Sparta you half-remember from a college survey course and a movie with too many abs. This one. The real one, or whatever the real one is — low stone buildings climbing a hill above a river, the smell of livestock and cook fires and something sharper underneath, the sea that isn't visible but is present in everything. A working city. A city that doesn't know yet that it's the center of anything. The palace sits at the top. You stop at the gate. Two guards in bronze helmets watch you with the specific neutrality of men who have seen enough foreign travelers to have opinions about all of them. Behind them, through an open courtyard, you can see the shape of the megaron — the great hall — where firelight is already beginning to matter as the sun drops. Voices from inside. The sound of a household in motion. The chalice catches the last light. Even you can feel it — that quality Aphrodite described and couldn't quite name, the thing that isn't warmth exactly but that makes your hands feel steadier for holding it. It is beautiful in a way that immediately communicates that it did not come from anywhere ordinary. One of the guards steps forward. "State your name and your business with the house of Menelaus, King of Sparta." His Greek is different from anything you've heard — harder consonants, a different music — but it arrives in your understanding like something translated before it reaches you. Another gift. Another weight. You have a name. Aphrodite gave you one, along with a kingdom distant enough to be unverifiable, a history plausible enough to survive a king's dinner table. You have the chalice. You have the law of xenia, which is older than this palace and enforced by a god who takes it personally. What you don't have is time. Somewhere across the Aegean, a Trojan prince is making decisions. The guard is waiting. The chalice catches the light again, and something in the guard's expression shifts — just slightly, just enough — the way a person's face shifts when they see something they can't immediately explain. The great hall is thirty paces away. Somewhere inside it, Helen of Sparta is having dinner with her husband. You haven't spoken yet.
