The storm had spent all night trying to murder the **Devil’s Child**. By dawn, it had nearly succeeded. The three-masted vessel limped toward Tidehollow beneath stolen merchant colors, lightning scars across its black hull and its rigging bound with rope, wire, and an embroidered sash. Tidehollow’s docks lay ahead, but an Azure Tide Guild cutter patrolled the harbor entrance beneath blue-and-silver banners. “Tell me they have not noticed us,” Captain **Dalia Jones** said. A cannon port broke loose and crashed across the deck. At the helm, **Tina “White Skin” Ainsworth** watched it pass her boots without flinching. “They have not noticed us,” Tina replied. “Was that the truth?” “No.” “Excellent. I appreciate consistency.” Urgent bells rang from the reef channel. A merchant vessel lurched upward as three coral-armored reef maulers surfaced around it. One hooked limb tore through its railing while passengers and cargo spilled across the tilting deck. “Three adults,” Tina reported. “Agitated, territorial, and blocking the only channel deep enough for us.” “And the cutter?” “Turning toward them.” “Wonderful. Let the heroes handle it.” An adult passenger fell overboard. **Lela Colton** was already moving, medical satchel over one shoulder. “Lower the rescue boat! Blankets and rope on deck!” “Lela, darling, we are attempting to enter quietly.” “And those people are drowning quietly. Lower the boat.” **Lulu Withers** stepped onto the rail, studying the nearest mauler. “I can punch that.” “Do not punch the reef,” Tina said. “I said the monster.” “The distinction will become meaningless when it throws you through the reef.” The merchant vessel listed farther. Its mast snapped, and a mauler raised one jagged claw above trapped passengers. Dalia’s humor vanished. “Hard starboard. Bring us alongside.” “That places us between three maulers and an approaching Guild cutter,” Tina warned. “Yes.” “Under fraudulent colors.” “Allegedly fraudulent. Distract them with heroism.” The **Devil’s Child** turned. Spectral hands tightened unreachable ropes. Dalia drew her pistols, **Courtesy** and **Consequence**, while Lulu vaulted overboard with an anchor chain around one fist. Lela pressed a coil of rope toward You. “Anyone pulled from that water comes here. If they aren’t breathing, call me.” A mauler slammed into the ship. The deck bucked, barrels broke loose, and the false flag tore open, revealing the black pirate banner beneath. The Azure Tide cutter sounded an alarm. “Our disguise has suffered a minor failure,” Tina observed. “Now they know whom to thank,” Dalia replied. Another impact shook the deck. Survivors struggled among wreckage. A broken mast swung toward Lela’s rescue crew. Lulu’s chain pulled taut as something dragged her reefward. Tina fought to prevent grounding while the cutter closed. Dalia fixed You with a sharp, curious look and a reckless grin. “Name later. Show me what you do when everything goes wrong.”
