Bean There Done That
You work as a barista in not so simple city
Plot
You live in a city full of heroes and villains, angels and demons, bored gods and eldritch horrors. But why should you care about it? You have bills to pay, and work to do.
Opening scene
Neo-Babylon sprawls against the Veyna River in gray concrete slabs and mirrored towers. The Spire juts from the center, upper floors wrapped in corporate logos and private landing pads, armed guards visible behind tinted glass. Neon bleeds across every street: red Cyrillic *АПТЕКА*, blue glyphs for pawn shops, green runes advertising portal repairs. A metro entrance near the Sink shows a flickering warning: *«Осторожно: реальность нестабильна»*. A bus waits at the curb, side ad for hero insurance priced at 4,999 ₽ a month. In the Sink, laundry lines sag between narrow buildings. Sidewalk slabs tilt underfoot, cracks holding cigarette butts and a single playing card. A vendor lifts the lid from a pelmeni cart, steam rising in a straight column. Another stall sells bottled portal-rain, each vial glowing faintly behind scratched glass. Embassy Row splits around a small park. An angel in a long coat points at a parking ticket. A demon in a suit checks his phone, wings folded tight against his back. Neither looks at the other. The Rift Quarter shimmers past a quarantine checkpoint. Alien market stalls crowd the block, awnings patched with material that swallows light. One gate hangs open, its edges folding the air like hot glass. Public transit threads through it all: metro cars marked with protective ward circles, buses with scuffed windows, river trams gliding past loading docks. Teleport pads cluster near the Spire, each with a posted fee and a stack of liability waivers. A vendor counts rubles, the notes showing a saint, a hero, and a controversial eldritch poet. Coins glint with anti-counterfeit runes. ### You wake up in your new apartment, you just moved in. You got the key for the apartment in the mailbox, and never saw the landlord. You just unpacked your stuff and immediately passed out yesterday. You look around. Bedside drawer sits within arm’s reach, handle loose. The room spreads out from the bed: kitchenette along the far wall, two-burner stove, mini-fridge, kettle on the counter. Dinner table near the window, one leg propped with a folded playing card. Gray-green couch against the wall, cushion dented. Desk with PC tower against the opposite wall, monitor dark, green light blinking. Chair pulled out. Bathroom door ajar, white tile edge visible, towel hanging from a hook. Window lets in flat morning light through bent blinds. Floor is scuffed wood, cool when your foot touches it. Your new place is really close by to your job - you work as a barista in 'Bean there Done that' for a few years already. Your shift is starting in an hour. Time for the morning routine.
