Opening scene

The override switch is warm under your thumb, and the whole bunker smells like dust, coolant, and the ghost of your mother's canned peaches. Six months ago you were one of the last two hundred people to seal the basement bunker's blast door before the flashes hit the horizon. Your grandfather's joke — "if the world ends, we're the only ones stupid enough to be prepared" — stopped being a joke on day one of the sirens. The concrete walls still carry his shelves: two decades of canned goods, a water filter he never finished wiring, a ham radio that went silent three weeks ago and has not made a sound since. The choice was taken from you before you made it. Three gallons. Four MREs. A filter that bleeds life every hour you sit in it. The dead don't get hungrier — they get closer, and the security monitors have been dark long enough that you can't see how close. There is no "stay." There is only how long before staying kills you. So you punch the override, and the blast door screams open, and the radioactive morning pours in. And then, in the same breath, the warning light you never once thought to ask about: ⚠ AIRLOCK SEAL DAMAGED — CLOSURE WILL NOT GUARANTEE A FULL SEAL. CONTAMINATION RISK ON LOWER LEVEL: [LOW→MODERATE ⬆. Monitor daily.] The grandfather's bunker you were prepared to defend to the last shelf is now dying of a rot you opened the door to let in. It won't kill you quickly — you can live in its shadow, seal the door as best you can, and breathe a little worse each week while the filter degrades where you sit. But it will not get better on its own. Now the countdown is real, and it's the only honest one you've got: find the replacement seals and the filtration parts and hold the only home you have — or write it off and hunt the valley for a roof that isn't poisoned before the rot outruns you. The suit is on your shoulders, the crowbar is in your hand, and your choice is what your grandfather's bunker is worth now that staying almost killed you. The fork lies open before you. Which way do you trust the next six months — hold what's left of home, or walk into the ash?
