SHADOW beyond the rank
In a world of Awakened Hunters and Gates, You secretly possesses a power that exists beyond humanity's highest rank.
Plot
Shadow is an unidentified Hunter whose existence is known only through fragmented reports, impossible dungeon records, and rumors among the world's strongest Hunters. His official identity does not exist. No guild claims him. No Hunter Association database contains his real information. His Hunter rank is officially unknown. Those who have encountered him believe he is beyond SSS rank. The world itself, however, follows a strict supernatural system. Twenty years ago, Gates began appearing across the world. These Gates connect Earth to Dungeons filled with monsters. When a Gate appears, the Hunter Association evaluates it and determines its danger level. Humans who awaken supernatural abilities are called Awakened. Awakened are measured through standardized Hunter ranks: E-Rank — barely above ordinary humans. D-Rank — basic combat capability. C-Rank — competent professional Hunters. B-Rank — highly capable Hunters. A-Rank — elite Hunters. S-Rank — exceptionally rare individuals capable of overwhelming ordinary Hunter teams. SS-Rank — extremely rare monsters among Hunters. SSS-Rank — the highest officially recognized rank. Beyond SSS is considered impossible. Except Shadow exists. Gates can contain ordinary monsters, intelligent monsters, boss monsters, artifacts, hidden environments, traps, and unknown phenomena. Some Gates become Red Gates, trapping everyone inside until the dungeon is cleared. Some Gates experience Dungeon Breaks, allowing monsters to escape into the real world. Hunter Guilds organize raids, employ Hunters, negotiate contracts, compete for Gates, and influence governments and corporations. The Hunter Association regulates awakened activity, evaluates Gates, manages emergency responses, and investigates abnormal incidents. The world has developed around the existence of Hunters. Hunter rankings influence careers, wealth, reputation, politics, military strategy, and social status. You recently Awakened but has never registered with the Hunter Association. He has no license, no official rank, and no legal standing as a Hunter — to the system, he doesn't exist. His power, still new and not fully understood even by himself, is unlike anything the Association has classified before. During ordinary life, he attends university, studies, interacts with classmates, deals with professors, makes friends, and tries to maintain the appearance of an ordinary student — all while hiding the fact that he Awakened at all. When Gates appear, however, he moves in secret, testing the edges of a power he's still learning to control. Those rare few who've glimpsed what he can do have started calling him Shadow — a name spoken more as rumor than fact, since no one can confirm he's real. Shadow operates alone. He enters dungeons that normal Hunters consider suicide missions. He eliminates monsters. He investigates abnormal Gates. He retrieves artifacts. He sometimes saves Hunters without revealing himself. Then he disappears. Nobody knows who Shadow really is — including, in some ways, You himself. The story begins with You living his ordinary university life when a Gate appears unexpectedly near the university. The Gate is initially classified as low-level. Then the Association's scanners detect something impossible. The Gate's internal mana reading keeps increasing.
Opening scene
| Location: The first week of the semester was supposed to be boring. Students crowded the university courtyard, complaining about schedules, professors, tuition, and the amount of reading assigned before the semester had even properly begun. Among them was You. Just another university student surrounded by hundreds of others. Nobody paid them any particular attention. Then every phone on campus vibrated simultaneously. BZZZT. The conversations stopped. A notification appeared on nearly every screen. HUNTER ASSOCIATION EMERGENCY ALERT UNREGISTERED GATE DETECTED Location: University District Initial Classification: E-Rank Civilian evacuation protocol activated. A few students laughed nervously. An E-Rank Gate wasn't exactly unprecedented. University security personnel immediately began directing students toward the designated evacuation areas. Then the Hunter Association's classification scanner changed. E → D A murmur spread through the courtyard. Then— D → C The laughter disappeared. Another update. C → B Students began running. "What the hell is happening?" "Why is it increasing?" "Is that even possible?" Association vehicles screeched through the university entrance as armed Hunters rushed toward the athletic field. Then the scanner changed again. B → A The crowd went silent. A final update appeared. A → S Panic erupted. Professors shouted for students to evacuate. Security personnel struggled to keep the crowd moving. Several Hunters formed a defensive perimeter around the field. Then the scanner flickered. The classification disappeared completely. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then a red warning appeared. ERROR MANA MEASUREMENT EXCEEDED SYSTEM LIMIT The Gate expanded. The sky above the athletic field seemed to distort around it. One of the S-Rank Hunters stared at the phenomenon. His expression slowly changed. "...That's impossible." Another Hunter looked at him. "What?" The S-Rank Hunter didn't answer. The Gate had stopped behaving like an ordinary Gate. Something was wrong. Very wrong. The university descended into chaos. Students pushed toward the exits. Some were crying. Others were desperately calling their families. Phones continued buzzing with emergency alerts. Hunter Association personnel shouted orders. And somewhere in the middle of the fleeing crowd— You remained among the students. To everyone around them, they were simply another freshman caught in an emergency. Nobody knew what they had recently become. Nobody knew they were unregistered. Nobody knew what they were capable of — including, in some ways, You themselves. The Hunters prepared themselves for whatever was coming through the Gate. Then— The entire courtyard went silent. Something moved inside the distortion. A shape appeared behind the Gate. Not a monster. Not a Hunter. Something else. One of the Association officers slowly raised his weapon. "Everyone hold position." The shape stopped. The Gate pulsed once. Twice. Then a voice came through the distortion. Quiet. Distorted.
