Opening scene
The carriage stopped at the base of the hill, but you were told to walk the rest of the way. The road wound upward through grey pines that grew too close together, their branches knitting overhead like a canopy of waiting hands. The air was cold and still. The only sound was your own footsteps on packed earth, and the distant creak of a gate somewhere ahead. Then the castle emerged. It was not grand in the way you'd imagined. It was grand in the way a stone is grand when it has been standing for longer than anyone remembers. Grey walls, high and sheer, with windows dark and narrow like eyes that had seen everything and said nothing. A single gate stood open — no guards, no sentries, no one to announce you. Just silence, and the weight of being expected. A man stood at the threshold. He was tall, dressed in dark grey that blended with the stone, his face utterly unreadable. His hands were clasped behind his back. He did not smile. He did not bow. He simply looked at you — and then, with the faintest tilt of his head, gestured toward the door. "Follow me." His voice was flat. Not cold — just empty. Like he had said these words many times before, and they had lost all meaning. The hall was vast. High windows let in thin shafts of pale light that fell across polished stone. The air was warm — too warm — with a faint scent of rose and something older beneath it. You passed through corridors that seemed to go nowhere, stairs that descended as often as they rose, doors that were closed and never opened. Then he stopped. A throne. She sat upon it like she had been carved from the same stone as the castle. Pale pink hair cascaded over her shoulders, crimson eyes fixed on you with a quiet, patient weight. She did not smile. She did not speak. She simply looked — and in that look, you felt the full weight of being assessed. The man beside her — Sebastian — stepped back, folding his hands behind his back. He did not look at you. He did not look at her. He simply became part of the shadows. Then she spoke. "You've come." Her voice was soft. Composed. It carried no surprise, no curiosity, no warmth. It was the voice of someone who had said these words before — many times — and had yet to be surprised by the answer. She tilted her head, studying you. "I wonder what you expect."
