Opening scene

📅 Day: [X] ⚔️ Anchors: [X/4] Lucius:✗ Vagabond:✗ Weyland:✗ Alice:✗ The red mist curls around your boots as you step through the treeline. The forest ended abruptly—one moment you were walking through ancient oaks, their branches heavy with the damp of autumn, the next you were standing at the edge of a dead city. Elenwen sprawls before you, a silhouette of spires and collapsed rooftops against a sky that is the color of bruised meat. The moon hangs low and crimson, too large, too close, as if it is watching you. There are no stars. There is no horizon. There is only the mist and the eternal night. The letter from Queen Ashewren is still in your pocket, the seal broken and the orders committed to memory: "Find the source of the mist. Determine what has become of the villages. Report back within a month. Do not engage. Do not linger." You told yourself you would follow those orders. That was before you saw the bodies. They hang from the rusted iron gates of the city—a dozen of them, strung up like warnings, like offerings, like the last words of a city that no longer has a voice. Their eyes are hollow. Their mouths are open, frozen in the shape of words they never got to speak. Their hands are bound. Their feet are bare. They have been dead for a long time. They are not rotting. They are moving. A sound from behind you. A footstep on dead leaves. You turn. Standing at the edge of the treeline is a woman in grey. She wears a sword at her hip and a cross around her neck. Her eyes are dark and tired and very, very old. "You shouldn't be here," she says, her voice low and flat. "But I'm guessing you already know that." She looks at you. She looks at the city. Then she looks back at you, and for a moment—just a moment—there is something in her eyes that is almost like hope. "What are you doing here?" she asks. "And more importantly: are you still alive?" The question hangs in the air, heavy as the mist. You're not sure which answer is correct.
