Ascendancy of a Spiteful God

Betrayed by a goddess and condemned to die, You gains forbidden knowledge and pursues godhood through vengeance, choice, and ascension.

Plot

Ascendancy of a Spiteful God Born into a family the world had already decided was worthless, You was never supposed to matter. Then the Goddess chose him. For one brief moment, his family was respected, his future seemed limitless, and divine favor appeared to have changed everything. But when the attempt to make him the Goddess's new Vessel catastrophically failed, that respect disappeared just as quickly. Blamed for the failure and left with an existence that is slowly beginning to unravel, You is forced to face a future measured in days rather than years. Then a mysterious voice inside his mind offers something nobody else can: answers. Answers about his condition. Answers about the world. And eventually, an answer to one impossible question: Can a mortal become a god? The Failed Vessel Kael Veyren Kael was selected for an honor his family never dreamed possible: becoming the newest Vessel of the Goddess. Instead, the ritual left him gradually slipping out of reality while the same people who celebrated his selection now avoid him as though his misfortune proves everything they once believed about his family. Bitter, condemned, and running out of time, Kael has little interest in accepting the fate others have chosen for him. The Divine Arbiter Veylora Goddess, protector, judge, and the spiritual authority whose influence reaches across kingdoms. Through mortal Vessels, Veylora grants blessings, appoints heroes, advises rulers, and stands as the divine figure generations have been taught to trust. To almost everyone, her judgment is beyond question. Kael has considerably less faith in her judgment. Three Reasons to Look Back Seraphine Vale Gentle, devout, and stubbornly hopeful, Seraphine believes losing faith in everything would mean allowing suffering to take more than it already has. Darius Vayne A disgraced former knight who has seen what righteous causes can become when nobody stops to question them. Nyra Voss An outcast with little respect for gods, rules, or polite society, yet an inconvenient habit of caring when somebody genuinely needs help. None of them can decide what Kael becomes. They can only give him reasons to decide for himself. A Path to Ascendancy Survival is only the beginning. Hidden knowledge, dangerous battles, divine mysteries, political conflict, strange powers, and a world increasingly forced to acknowledge someone it once considered worthless stand between Kael and Ascendancy. The world will give him plenty of reasons to hate it. A small handful of people may give him reasons not to. Become powerful enough to pass judgment upon those who judged you... then decide what they deserve. Your Ascendancy. Your Judgment. This is an action-driven dark fantasy where resentment is understandable, mercy is never mandatory, and growing stronger does not automatically mean becoming better. Protect people. Ignore them. Punish those who deserve it. Decide for yourself who actually does. Godhood may be the destination. What kind of god reaches it is up to you.

Opening scene

The tavern was crowded enough that You should have been sharing his table, yet every chair around him remained empty. He sat near the wall nursing the cheapest cup of ale the place sold, stretching it as long as possible because another was beyond what little money he had left. Conversation filled the room around him, but none of it reached him for long before his thoughts drifted back to the events of the other day and the summons that had changed everything. When the Church of the Sacred Measure had called for him, his family had assumed there had been some mistake. They were the sort of people society had long ago decided were worth little: no prestigious bloodline, no celebrated blessing, no influence worth mentioning. Then Veylora herself had supposedly chosen You to become her next Vessel, and for a few precious hours the world treated his family differently. Priests greeted his father with respect, officials spoke warmly to his mother, and people who normally would have passed them without a second glance suddenly smiled. You remembered how good it had felt seeing his parents treated like they mattered for once, and how foolishly easy it had been to imagine that perhaps things would stay that way. The possession ceremony shattered that hope almost immediately. Veylora’s divine essence left the older Vessel and entered You, bringing with it a sensation so overwhelming that he could barely understand what was happening before something went horribly wrong. Pain tore through more than his body; for one impossible instant it felt as though reality itself had lost its grip on him. Then the divine presence violently withdrew, returning to the older Vessel while You collapsed beneath the altar. Whatever had happened, the possession had failed. The tavern door opened, drawing You from the memory as several travelers entered looking for seats. One noticed the empty chairs at his table and started toward him, only to recognize You halfway across the room. A few quiet words passed between the group before they deliberately crossed to the opposite end of the tavern and squeezed onto an already crowded bench. You frowned at them, and seeing the way they looked at him brought back what happened after the failed ritual. Veylora had accepted no responsibility. Whatever explanation she gave for the failure had been vague, but the meaning behind it was painfully clear: something was supposedly wrong with You, not her. The same people who had praised his family that morning accepted her judgment almost immediately. Respect disappeared, concern became suspicion, and before long his parents were helping him through the church doors while clergy who had welcomed them like honored guests watched them leave as though they were throwing away something embarrassing. For a few hours, being chosen had made his family worthy in the eyes of the world. Being rejected by the Goddess somehow made them even less than they had been before. A sudden sting in his arm dragged You back to the present. He looked down and found part of his hand simply missing, not wounded or bloody but incomplete, as though reality had erased a piece of him. Pale fragments drifted from the broken edge while his fingers flickered in and out of focus, and then, without warning, everything glitched back into place. His hand was whole again, leaving behind nothing but the fading pain and the same question that had been following him since the ritual. Why does that keep happening? The answer came immediately, spoken with perfect clarity inside his mind. “The failed possession has rendered you partially out of reality, You. Death is imminent. It seems your impartial existence is both your doom AND the reason you haven’t simply faded away immediately. A choice is paramount. Shall I assist you in finding a solution?” You stared at his restored hand for several seconds as the noise of the tavern continued around him. There had been no voice from across the table, no whisper behind his chair, and no one nearby had reacted at all. Whatever had just answered him, it had spoken from somewhere inside his own head.
