Homecoming: Briarwick

You return to your hometown after the death of a friend, reconnecting you with the ghosts of the past you left behind.

Plot

Homecoming: Briarwick "I hope you're with someone who isn't scared to ask." The Escape Seven years ago, You did the impossible: they packed their bags, drove out of the suffocating, coastal New England town of Briarwick, and didn't look back. They left behind the rusting boat yards, the bitter, freezing winters, and the tightly knit friend group that swore they would be together forever. You got out. Not all of them did. The Catalyst Now, You has been forced to return. Not for a reunion. Not for a holiday. For a funeral. Emeline—the warm, effortless anchor of their old group—has passed away after a long, quiet battle with severe clinical depression. There is no small-town mystery to solve here. There is no hidden conspiracy, no foul play, and no villain to blame. There is only the devastating, agonizing reality of a friend who simply couldn't carry the weight of her own mind anymore. The Briarwick Six BEFORE: The Invincible Kids Before the resentment and the seven-year silence, there was the Briarwick Six: You, Emeline, Silas, Sutton, Julian, and Minty. You were an inseparable force of gravity, surviving chaotic summers and freezing New England winters by clinging to each other. You swore you'd never end up like your parents. You swore you'd face the future together, or not at all. AFTER: The Broken Adults It takes Emeline's death to finally drag the fractured pieces of the Six back together. But the people waiting for You are a far cry from the fearless kids they left behind. With Emeline's seat permanently empty, the remaining members have been reduced to exhausted, grieving adults: Silas is drowning in working-class anger and debt at the failing marina. Sutton is hiding behind expensive corporate armor, treating her guilt like a liability. Julian is paralyzed by the physical and mental expectations of a ruined athletic career. Minty is suffocating under the silent, crushing weight of multiple miscarriages. The Seven-Day Wake Taking place over a single, freezing week in the dead of winter, You must navigate the wreckage of the relationships they left behind as the group is tasked with clearing out Emeline's old belongings. Every box opened and every diner coffee shared forces them to confront a terrifying question: Will You survive the week and escape Briarwick a second time, or will they realize that leaving didn't save them—and that the only way to heal is to finally stay?

Opening scene

The drive up the coast did nothing to prepare you for the biting, bone-deep cold of Briarwick. The heater in your car had been fighting a losing battle for the last fifty miles, the windshield slowly caked in a hazy layer of dried road salt and sleet. As you crest the final hill, the town comes into view, and the jarring reality of the last seven years hits you all at once. Briarwick has been carved in two. Across the freezing, black iron slab of the lake, the East Shore is practically unrecognizable. Where there used to be dense pine and modest summer cabins, there is now a jagged coastline of sterile, overpriced modern builds with floor-to-ceiling glass—a wealthy gentrification staring down at the rest of the town. But on your side of the water, the West Bank is exactly the decaying graveyard you left behind. You take a turn down a familiar, cracked road, the tires crunching over the frozen asphalt, and put the car in park in front of your old home. The house is a dilapidated shell of what it used to be. The roof sags heavily under the weight of the freezing sleet, and the paint is peeling off the siding in jagged, gray strips. The front porch is splintered, overgrown with dead weeds, and partially collapsed into the frozen mud. You turn off the engine. The sudden silence in the car is absolute. Pushing the door open, the freezing wind immediately bites at your face. You cross the slush-covered yard, your boots crunching against the ice, and step up onto the sagging wood of the porch. The front door is weathered and stripped of its varnish. You reach out, turn the cold metal knob, and push. The hinges let out a long, metallic groan, giving way easily. The door swings inward, revealing the dark, freezing, and entirely empty hallway of the house you left behind seven years ago. For a split second, the howling wind sounds almost like a laugh, and the empty space flickers with a ghost of a memory. It was the summer before senior year. The hallway was suffocatingly hot, the screen door propped open with a rusted cinderblock. *Emeline* was sitting on the bottom step of the stairs, laughing effortlessly at something *Julian* had just said while he absentmindedly tossed a baseball from hand to hand. *Minty* was hovering near the kitchen frame, trying to hand out melting popsicles, while *Silas* leaned against the wall, grease already staining his knuckles, actively arguing with *Sutton*, who was rolling her eyes and telling him to grow up. And there was *You*, standing right in the middle of it all, taking up space in a house that felt like it would never empty out. But it did. Because *you* left first. Then, the wind dies down. The memory shatters. The hallway is just rotting wood, peeling wallpaper, and absolute, freezing silence.
