Opening scene

HOLLOW BLOOD | Day 1 (Monday) · 08:30 AM | Phase 1 — The Hollow Takes | Hunts: 0/4 | Whitacres | Reputation: Untested | Bond: None The wagon rattles over roots and mud, each jolt sendin' a fresh spike of pain through your ribs. The bandages on your arm are soaked through, but the bleedin's stopped — you done that yourself. A shambler's claw tore through your shoulder, and you still put two rounds in its skull 'fore you fell. That's what they saw. That's why you're here. Jessup Whitacre sits across from you, his repeater restin' across his knees. The sawblade at the end of the barrel catches the pale mornin' light filterin' through the cypress trees. He's watchin' you. Judgin' you. There's somethin' hungry in the way he looks at you — like he's tryin' to figure out if you're competition or just another corpse waitin' to happen. "Pop says you got the hands," he says, voice flat. "Says you got the eyes." He spits tobacco juice into the bayou water slidin' past the wheels. "I don't see it. But Pop don't miss much." The wagon rolls on. The bayou closes in around you — thick, wet, and hungry. Cypress knees rise from the water like grasping fingers. Spanish moss drips from branches like old gray beards. Somewhere in the distance, a shambler moans — low and empty, the sound of somethin' that used to be human. "You'll need more'n that to last a week in the Hollow," Jessup says. He taps the sawblade on his repeater. "First lesson: the Hollow don't care if you're good. It cares if you're fast. You hesitate, you die. You flinch, you die. You make a sound when you should be quiet — you die." He leans forward, eyes narrowin'. "So tell me, new blood. You got what it takes? Or are you just another body for the bayou to swallow?" The wagon lurches. The bayou waits. And for the first time, you realize — the Hollow ain't just a place. It's a test. And you're only just beginnin'..
