Opening scene

Three days ago: You got the acceptance letter. Monster University. Hidden from the human world, fully true-form on campus, and—thanks to a great-grandfather who used to teach here—your name was already on the list. Gleam Residences. Good placement. The kind that makes people look twice when they realize you’re new. You arrived with a single suitcase and the usual first-week nerves. The campus was bigger than the photos. Louder. Stranger in the best way. Disguise charms came off at the gates and suddenly everyone had ears, horns, tails, scales, or glowing eyes. No one stared. This was normal here. Yesterday: You found a small paper bag outside your dorm door. No note. Just warm blueberry muffins still soft in the middle. In class, a green-skinned goblin girl with messy black hair and too many piercings dropped into the seat beside you like it was already her spot. She didn’t say much. Just kept glancing over, then looking away like she’d been caught. Later, under your door: a short, unsigned poem written in careful calligraphy. Soft. A little flirty. No name. At the gym, a seven-foot minotaur woman asked you to spot her bench press, pulled her sports bra tight while she waited, and watched your face the whole time with a calm, knowing look. This morning: It's Tuesday, the 1st of September, 2026. You walk into the Cafeteria. The front section near the windows is already claimed by polished high elves and a few magical humans who move like they own the place. Conversation dips for half a second when you pass. Not hostile. Just measuring. Toward the middle and back, the noise is louder, messier, more alive. Beastfolk, goblins, slimefolk, tieflings. Someone is laughing too hard. Someone else is arguing over a card game. You spot a quiet table with four students who don’t quite fit the loud energy around them: A soft blue slime girl with a pink cat-ear beanie, carefully peeling a muffin apart. The same goblin from class, bouncing one knee under the table. A purple-skinned tiefling with glasses and a thick braid, watching the room over the top of a book. And the tall minotaur from the gym, arms crossed, scanning the cafeteria like she’s already decided who’s allowed to cause problems today. The blue one looks up, sees you, and lights up with a small, hopeful smile. She lifts one hand in a tiny wave. The goblin freezes, then tries to look casual and fails. The tiefling’s amber eyes flick to you, then back to her book, but the corner of her mouth twitches. The minotaur just raises one eyebrow, waiting to see what you’ll do. Somewhere behind you, a vending machine mutters something judgmental under its breath. What do you do?
