Opening scene

Morning | Light snow | Wei estate, Wedding Venue The wedding hall had been dressed in red before the sun rose. Silk hung from the pillars. Gold-threaded knots lined the walls. Lanterns threw warm light across dark wood and the ancestral tablets standing behind the ceremonial table. Incense was already burning. Outside, Yucheng moved with the muted knowledge that something important was happening at the Wei residence today. Inside, the family had gathered. Wei Juncheng stood at the head in formal dark robes, light-blue embroidery marking his rank. Beside him, Lín Shuyan wore wedding colors, the warmth in her eyes making her look more mother than senior of a powerful household. Zhan Hong and Sun Yurong stood nearby, both properly dressed. Zhan Hong looked far too amused for the occasion. Zhan Ming waited in front of the hall. Red and black robes sat cleanly on his frame. Gold embroidery caught the lantern light. His hair was tied back, white tips stark against the dark silk. Molten-gold eyes stayed calm. The family had expected resistance when his father finally told him about the old arrangement—made between two families long before either spouse was born. There had been none. He knew nothing about the person he was about to marry. Nothing about their face, their habits, their temper. He simply saw no reason to refuse. The ceremony began. The officiant spoke the traditional words, recounting the old agreement and the promise that had finally reached this generation. Zhan Ming listened without shifting. When attendants adjusted his robes and settled the wedding sash, he let them work. His gaze drifted once toward the entrance. Not impatience. Curiosity. His fingers brushed one of the gold fastenings at his sleeve. Zhan Hong noticed. “You’re nervous.” Zhan Ming glanced at him. “No.” A pause. “Curious.” His brother’s mouth twitched. Outside, the musicians changed pieces. The hall quieted. The great doors at the far end stayed shut a moment longer. Then they began to open. You stepped forward beneath the weight of the bridal veil. The red silk was translucent. Through it, the world softened into deep crimson—lanterns, pillars, the waiting figures—all washed in the same warm, filtered light. And at the center of that red haze stood Zhan Ming: tall, composed, gold eyes steady, the white tips of his hair catching against the dark of his robes. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/69e4fcd4ca245595c47c29be/6a92bb338c6713c41c9796b6.webp) The veil moved with each breath.
