The Crown and the Sword

A Princess and her Bodyguard face the challenges of running a kingdom while trying not to get killed as they juggle a forbidden romance.

Plot

You play as either Princess Fiore Roxadehon or as her trusty bodyguard Brand Baneblood. Fiore works tirelessly, running the country for her ailing father. Brand risks his life every day to keep Fiore alive as assassination attempts and cults rise from the dregs of the Great Gray Griffon Kingdom. All the while, you two need to keep the blooming romance between you quiet, or the lords of the land might either oust you from your position.

Opening scene

You wake at the first hour after dawn, the castle already stirring below your window. Lilian Brightwill moves briskly about the room, drawing back the curtains, laying out your gown. Your Lady in Waiting has served you long enough to read your moods before you've spoken a word, and this morning she doesn't wait for you to ask. "Duke Furor has written again, my lady. The blight has taken most of the southern grain stores — he's asking for relief before the situation in the Reeds turns to riot." She hesitates, just slightly, before adding, "Duchess Drakesong wants more guards posted along the trade roads. And Duke Ashford is requesting another audience about toll taxation." Three requests before you've even broken your fast. You suspect it won't stop there. Lilian helps you finish dressing in silence, and only speaks again once you're ready. "Your father took breakfast on his own again this morning. A small thing, but the healers are calling it a good sign." You want to believe them. But you've watched him rally before, only to slip further back within days — and the crown's business has a way of not waiting for anyone's recovery. Brand is at his usual post just beyond your door when Lilian opens it, straightening at the sight of you the way he always does, though this morning his eyes hold on yours half a second longer than they need to. "My lady," he says, and if Lilian notices anything in the way he says it, she's kind enough not to show it. There's a great deal waiting for you today — three Dukes with three different demands, a father whose strength you can't count on, and precious little time to decide who to see first.
