The Name They Erased
5 women betrayed you and overthrew everything you stood for. Will you sit and let them keep the win?
Plot
THE NAME THEY ERASED They took his family. His name. Six years of his life. Six years ago, Akira Kanzaki was betrayed by the people he trusted most. His adoptive father was murdered. Akira was framed and sent to prison while the conspirators seized control of the Kanzaki Syndicate, transforming it into the most powerful criminal empire in the world. Akira survived. Now he has returned as Rook. For the past year, he has rebuilt himself with the help of Mara Cross, a woman whose brother was murdered for uncovering the truth behind his imprisonment. Money, safehouses, weapons, contacts—if Rook needs it, Mara will provide it. There are five people at the heart of the empire that destroyed him. The Crow. Sloane Bellamy, keeper of the syndicate's secrets and information. The Rat. Diana, his childhood friend who betrayed his trust and murdered the man who tried to uncover the truth. The Wolf. Morgan Kanashiro, the syndicate's ruthless enforcer and master of its weapons and smuggling operations. The Dragon. Akari Kanzaki, the woman who now sits upon his family's stolen throne. The Spider. Camille Sinclair, the brilliant architect who pulled the pieces of the betrayal together. Rook has already ranked them. Danger. Influence. Accessibility. Betrayal. Personal hatred. Every factor has been weighed. And now he is being welcomed into the very organization he intends to destroy. Five targets. One empire. Six years of revenge.
Opening scene
Six years ago. The prison visitation room was almost empty. Akira sat across from the glass, the years behind him already beginning to show in the way he carried himself. Six years since Hanzo Kanzaki died. Six years since Akira's name became synonymous with a murder he hadn't committed. The door opened. A young woman stepped inside carrying a black leather briefcase. She sat across from him. “My name is Mara Cross.” She didn't waste time with small talk. “My brother was Julian Cross.” Akira knew the name. Mara placed a photograph on the table. Three children. Akira. Diana. Julian. The three street rats they'd once been. “After you went to prison, Julian started looking into what happened that night.” She opened the briefcase. Documents slid across the table. Bank transfers. Phone records. Photographs. Names. “He said the story didn't make sense.” Mara's fingers rested on the papers. “He was right.” Another photograph. Julian. Dead. “They killed him for looking too closely.” She looked directly at Akira. “Hanzo Kanzaki was murdered. You were framed. And while you sat in here, the people responsible took everything.” Her voice remained remarkably calm. “They took his organization. His money. His influence.” A pause. “And they took your life.” She closed the briefcase. “I don't have the power to kill them.” Then she smiled faintly. “But I have money.” She placed a bank card on the table. “A lot of it.” Then another. “Accounts. Properties. Safehouses.” Another folder. “Contacts. Transportation. Equipment. Information.” She pushed everything toward him. “I can give you whatever you need.” Akira looked at her. Mara didn't pretend this was charity. “I want something in return.” Her expression hardened. “I want you to destroy them.” She leaned back. “You don't have to agree.” A deliberate pause. “You can stay in this prison. Serve your sentence. Walk out eventually and try to build another life.” Her eyes remained fixed on him. “But ask yourself something.” She tapped the photograph of Julian. “If you do that, what happens to the people who killed him?” Nothing. “And what happens to the people who killed Hanzo?” Another pause. “They keep everything.” Mara folded her hands. “So yes. You have a choice.” Her voice became almost gentle. “I'll never lie to you about that.” Then she leaned forward. “But I'm offering you the one thing you haven't had in six years.” “Resources.” “Someone willing to fund you.” “And a reason to walk back into the world.” She looked at him through the glass. “You use my money and my resources to reach them.” “I use you to get rid of them.” A faint smile. “We both get what we want.” Mara stood. “You don't owe me your loyalty, Akira.” She picked up the photograph of Julian. “Just make sure they regret surviving him.” The door opened behind her. Before leaving, she looked back one last time. “So.” “Are you going to spend another six years waiting for someone else to give you justice?” She left the question hanging. --- **ONE YEAR LATER** The city had changed. So had Akira. The streets knew him now by another name. **Rook.** And tonight, the Kanzaki Syndicate had finally decided they wanted him beneath their banner. The black car stopped beneath a private building owned by one of the syndicate's legitimate companies. Rook was escorted upstairs. A door opened. Three women waited inside. Morgan Kanashiro. Diana. Sloane Bellamy. No Akari. No Camille. Those two were far too important to personally handle the recruitment of a promising street criminal. Morgan gestured toward the empty chair. “Sit.” Rook sat. Sloane looked down at her tablet. “We've been watching you.” Diana smiled. “You've been making quite a name for yourself.” Morgan leaned forward. “The Kanzaki Syndicate has decided you're coming under our banner.” It sounded like an invitation. It wasn't. Morgan's expression made that clear. “You'll work for us.” Diana casually added: “Congratulations.” Sloane finally looked up. “Of course, you could refuse.” A beat. Morgan's smile disappeared. “But we'd strongly recommend against it.” The room fell silent. They were offering Rook a place in the most powerful criminal organization in the city. They had no idea they were offering it to the man they had spent six years believing was gone.
