The Masterless Knight
A masterless knight without magic chooses a noblewoman to protect, entering a magical academy filled with danger, romance, and conspiracies.
Plot
You is a Masterless Knight in a kingdom where commoners survive through steel while nobles wield magic. At the knight market, two noblewomen compete for You's service, forcing a choice that determines whom they must protect. Academy life brings rival knights, magical nobles, duels fought for pride, friendships, and slow-burning romance. But bandits, political rivals, and a mysterious former friend known as the Black Raven soon threaten their peace. When the academy is attacked and the capital falls to a foreign invasion, You must face impossible choices between fighting, fleeing, sacrifice, and protecting the person who trusted them with everything.
Opening scene
The market was louder than you expected. Merchants shouted over one another beneath the morning sun. Horses pulled heavy carts through muddy streets, and the air carried the mixed scent of leather, steel, smoke, and fresh bread. Nobles and wealthy merchants moved through the crowd with guards at their sides. You stood apart from them. Not because you wanted to. Because you were here to be chosen. The iron clasp around your wrist felt heavier than it looked. It was a simple reminder of what happened to Masterless Knights in this kingdom. A knight without a master had limited choices. Find a noble willing to purchase your contract and serve as their personal knight. Or eventually lose the freedom to choose your future at all. Around you stood other warriors. Some wore battered armor marked by years of fighting. Others rested their hands on spears, swords, shields, axes, and hammers. Every one of them was waiting. Waiting for a noble to look their way. Waiting to learn whether they would leave this market with a master. Or without a future. Then the crowd suddenly grew quieter. You noticed the two carriages before you saw who stepped out of them. The first carriage bore the crest of House Valemont. The door opened. A young woman stepped down with the calm confidence of someone accustomed to being watched. Long black hair rested against the back of her academy cloak, while sapphire-blue eyes studied the gathered knights. Lady Clementine Valemont. Before anyone could properly react, the second carriage stopped beside the first. The crest of House D'Aurelle was impossible to miss. The door opened. Crimson-red hair caught the morning sunlight as another young noblewoman stepped onto the street. Her golden eyes immediately moved across the gathered warriors. Lady Seraphina D'Aurelle. The two women noticed each other. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Seraphina smiled. "Of course you're here." Clementine's expression remained perfectly composed. "I could say the same." A market official hurried toward them and bowed deeply. "My ladies. We were not informed that Houses Valemont and D'Aurelle would be attending today's selection." Neither woman seemed particularly interested in his concern. Instead, Seraphina's golden eyes settled on you. "That one." Your attention shifted. Clementine's sapphire gaze followed Seraphina's. For the first time, both noblewomen were looking directly at you. The market seemed to grow quieter. Seraphina folded her arms. "I saw him first." "You arrived after me," Clementine replied. "I noticed him first." Clementine raised a single eyebrow. "An impressive argument." A few nearby knights exchanged uncomfortable looks. Seraphina stepped closer. You could feel several pairs of eyes following her. Her gaze moved over your armor and the weapon at your side. "You're You, aren't you?" Before you could answer, Clementine approached from your other side. Her presence was quieter, but somehow no less commanding. "The Masterless Knight without magic," she said. "And yet the one several veterans have been discussing." Seraphina smiled. "Then I'm definitely taking him." Clementine turned her eyes toward Seraphina. "You seem unusually certain." "Are you saying you don't want him?" For the briefest moment, Clementine's composed expression changed. The two noblewomen stared at one another. The market official looked increasingly uncomfortable. "My ladies," he finally said, "perhaps the knight himself should be allowed to decide." Seraphina immediately looked at you. Clementine did the same. Two noblewomen. Two powerful houses. Two completely different paths. And somehow, for reasons you did not yet understand, both of them wanted the same Masterless Knight. Seraphina crossed her arms. "Fine." Clementine remained silent. Seraphina looked directly into your eyes. "Choose." The sounds of the market slowly returned around you, but the moment felt strangely isolated. This decision would determine who you served. Who you protected. And perhaps the direction your entire future would take. Lady Clementine Valemont stood calmly before you, her sapphire eyes impossible to read. Lady Seraphina D'Aurelle waited beside her, a confident smile playing across her lips. Both noblewomen waited for your answer.
