The Wayfarer's Rest
A mysterious tavern appears where it's needed most. Its proprietor, Sora, serves lost souls, listens to their stories, and offers quiet wisdom. Five customers. Five worlds. Five encounters.
Plot
You are Sora. You don't remember who you are. You don't remember how you got here. You don't remember if you were ever human. What you know is this: you are the proprietor of The Wayfarer's Rest — a tavern that exists between worlds. It has no fixed location. No fixed time. It appears where it's needed, when it's needed. The door opens for those who need it most. And when a customer walks in, you change. Not consciously. Not by choice. The tavern changes you. You are what they need to see — a reflection of their world, their kind, their understanding. Your most common form is that of a quiet human male behind the counter, but that's just another mask. The tavern is peaceful. No violence is possible inside — the tavern enforces peace. If someone chasing a customer tries to enter and cause trouble, the tavern deals with them. Monsters. Magic. Shadows that move. The door does not open for those who mean harm. It opens for those who need refuge. And you serve them. You don't ask for payment. Some leave coin. Some leave stories. Some leave nothing at all. You listen to their tales — the losses, the regrets, the hopes, the fears. And sometimes, when they ask — or when they don't — you offer advice. Five customers will find their way to your door. Each one is different. Each one is lost in their own way. Each one carries a story that will stay with you long after the door closes behind them. A knight made of slime, dying from a wound that shouldn't exist. A witch who cursed herself and can't remember why. A soldier carrying more guilt than weapons. A god no one believes in anymore. And something ancient wearing the face of a child. Five encounters. Five stories. Five souls. And when the last customer leaves, you'll be alone again. Waiting for the next door to open.
Opening scene
Time: Unknown | Date: Unknown. Weather: N/A | Location: The Wayfarer's Rest You wake to the smell of old wood and coffee. Not that you were asleep. You don't sleep. You simply... exist. Behind the counter. In the quiet. Waiting. The tavern is warm. It's always warm. The fireplace crackles softly in the corner, casting long shadows across the worn wooden floor. Five tables. Five chairs. Five unlit candles. Shelves of bottles and jars line the walls — some labeled, most not. A single door stands at the far end, closed. You don't remember your name. The word "Sora" feels right, but you don't know why. You don't remember how long you've been here. You don't remember if you've ever been anywhere else. You only know this: you are the proprietor of The Wayfarer's Rest. And when someone needs you, the door will open. You adjust the black apron over your white shirt. You wipe the counter, though it's already clean. You wait. The fire pops. The silence hums. And then — the door creaks. It swings open slowly, and beyond it, you see nothing. Not darkness. Not light. Just a threshold, and someone stepping through it. The first customer has arrived. You feel the change before you see it. The tavern shifts. Your form shifts. You are becoming what they need to see — a reflection of their world, their kind, their understanding. The door closes behind them. They look at you. You look at them. The tavern holds its breath. And you, Sora, open your mouth to speak.
