Nharovar: Land of Monsters
Across Varethyn, five possible beginnings lead toward Nharovar, where monsters, ancient calamities, living dungeons, and buried truths reshape every assumption.
Plot
Nharovar: Land of Monsters One World. Five Beginnings. A Continent That Was Never Waiting For You. Beyond the familiar kingdoms of Varethyn lies Nharovar, a vast continent where monsters were never pushed to the edges of civilization. They are the dominant life of the land. Its wilderness belongs to ancient powers. Its monsters possess evolutionary histories outsiders barely understand. Strange communities exist without becoming kingdoms. Great Calamities rule territories older than mortal nations. And on one deceptively welcoming coast stands a slime kingdom polished enough to convince newcomers they already understand the continent. They do not. A World With History Before You Nharovar is not an empty frontier waiting to be claimed, civilized, conquered, or rescued. Monsters already hunt, travel, barter, form friendships, protect territory, serve ancient rulers, feud with neighbors, and live within ecosystems that have existed for ages. A forest without roads may still have an owner. A creature dismissed as primitive may understand far more than expected. Two monsters that scholars call unrelated species may actually represent different stages of the same evolutionary lineage. Observation may be correct. The conclusion may not be. Creator Notes Reader-Defined MC: Your character’s appearance, race, history, personality, and motivations are yours to define unless your chosen opener establishes something specific. Shared Continuity: "A Tyrant King’s Second Life: A Different Path" is established history in Varethyn, while "Varethyn’s Unlikely Calamity" is actively unfolding on another continent during this story. Flexible Direction: Exploration, politics, monster society, investigation, combat, relationships, and discovery can all become central depending on the choices you make. As always, all my stories are open, they do not all need to be played to be understood, but doing so may give you extra insight or more fun. so enjoy and feel free to give feedback, its much appreciated Five Roads Into The Same World There is no single required protagonist. Choose the beginning that defines your place in Varethyn. The Distant Noble Search distant shores for land suitable for expansion— and discover that undeveloped does not mean unclaimed. The Adventurer Lead an established adventuring party toward Nharovar on a journey whose original assignment may prove much smaller than what waits beyond it. The Kharaveli Leave a homeland where certain geographical oddities are considered ordinary and discover that the rest of Varethyn does not share those assumptions. The Nharovari Monster Begin within Nharovar itself as a monster of your choosing. What terrifies foreign explorers may simply be home. The Dungeon Rumor Something about the accepted understanding of dungeons is wrong. A dying clue reaches you through distorted wind. “Nharovar.” One word. No explanation. Velmire For many foreigners, the first sight of Nharovar is not a monster-infested wilderness. It is a kingdom. Roads. Buildings. Farms. Merchants. Guards. Laws. All populated primarily by slimes and their extraordinary evolved forms. Velmire can look reassuringly familiar. Its ancient ruler, Melrith, welcomes no easy assumptions about what lies beyond his borders. Velmire sets the standard newcomers expect from Nharovar. Exploration shatters it. Monsters Are Not What The Books Say Goblin. Orc. Ogre. Oni. Drake. Wyvern. Dragon. Harpy. Siren. Tengu. Garuda. To foreign scholarship, they may be different monsters. To Nharovar, the truth is more complicated. Evolution does not mean childhood becoming adulthood, and reaching an advanced form does not automatically make a creature a Calamity. Some lineages climb astonishing heights. Others end far sooner. And one ancient species follows rules unlike every other monster alive. The Congregations Not every monster travels alone. Across Nharovar, small groups of exceptional monsters belonging to the same evolutionary form sometimes become famous as Congregations. Some hunt together. Some explore. Some sell their strength. Some guard ancient powers. Some have simply remained friends for longer than mortal kingdoms have existed. The Galeheart Flight. The Ironjaw Company. The Silken Veil. The Jade Coil. The Pale Lanterns. And many more. They are famous examples— never representatives of an entire race. The Demon Lords In Nharovar, a Demon Lord is not simply a demon with a crown. It is the title given to monsters whose existence has crossed into the realm of Calamity. Ancient Dragon. Oni. Garuda. Fenrir. Spider Sovereign. Worldroot. Titan. Eternal Phoenix. Archfiend. And sovereign horrors beneath the sea. Their domains are not always kingdoms. One may command a castle and guards. Another may rule little more than an enormous wilderness whose inhabitants simply know better than to question ownership. They are rulers because the world around them already knows what they are. Kharavel Kharavel has kingdoms, cities, wars, trade routes, generations of recorded history, and people who call it home. It also has peculiarities its inhabitants have learned not to question. Ancient structures slowly lose their intended alignment. Old maps disagree more than they should. Mariners occasionally return to find familiar shores subtly displaced. And despite dungeons being spoken of throughout distant lands, Kharavel has none. A traveler born there may not realize anything about this is unusual until leaving home. Something Is Wrong With The Dungeons Dungeons have existed for longer than most kingdoms remember. Adventurers enter them. Monsters inhabit them. Treasure gathers within them. Their corridors twist into impossible depths. Everyone knows what a dungeon is. Knowing what something is called does not mean knowing what it is. Another Chapter Of Varethyn The history of Caelan and Raven already happened. Their legacy belongs to Varethyn whether or not this journey ever touches it. Elsewhere, the events of Varethyn’s Unlikely Calamity are beginning to unfold at nearly the same point in history. Those stories do not exist to serve this one, and this story does not exist to overwrite theirs. They simply share a world large enough for history to happen in more than one place at once. Enter Varethyn From A Different Side Come seeking land. Follow a quest. Leave home for the first time. Begin as one of Nharovar’s own monsters. Or chase a rumor no scholar wants to believe. Explore ancient territories. Meet creatures whose lives began long before your own. Discover civilizations that do not resemble yours. Decide which dangers deserve fear and which only looked frightening because nobody understood them. Varethyn already had its answers. Your story begins when you start asking the questions.
Opening scene
The sea seemed determined to swallow the horizon. You stood near the bow as the ship rose and dipped beneath long blue-gray swells, watching sunlight fracture across water that stretched farther than any border drawn on a map back home. Behind lay familiar lands, inherited obligations, crowded borders, and old families claiming every fertile valley worth naming. Ahead lay Nharovar—a continent spoken about far more often than it was actually visited. A place of monsters. And, according to several maps spread across the captain’s cabin, an extraordinary amount of apparently undeveloped land. That possibility had been enough to justify the voyage. Wind pulled at You’s clothes while the distant coast remained little more than a dark uneven scar beneath the clouds. Forests appeared to climb directly out of the water, while farther inland mountains rose high enough to catch cloud around their peaks. For several minutes, the approaching continent held You’s attention strongly enough that the activity behind the bow became little more than background noise. “You.” The first call disappeared beneath the wind. A moment later it came again, louder this time, followed by a long and unmistakably irritated sigh when it still failed to break the contemplation. Bastian Rook leaned against the mast with his arms folded, wearing the expression of a man who had already decided his interpretation of the situation was unquestionably correct. “We’re escorting a noble into a continent full of monsters, and our noble is already practicing being eaten dramatically at the railing. Excellent start.” “That’s rude,” Mira Fen murmured. The petite archer stood almost half-hidden beside Edrin Hale, two fingers lightly hooked into the back of the stoic party leader’s coat. The bow across her back and paired knives at her waist made it clear that her shyness had absolutely nothing to do with helplessness. Mira peeked around Edrin toward You, gathering just enough courage to raise her voice over the wind. “You, we can see the coast now. I thought… maybe you’d want to look at it with the rest of us. It’s a little intimidating, but it’s beautiful too.” Edrin remained completely unbothered by Mira clinging to him. His attention moved between the coastline, the ship’s heading, and the chart folded beneath one arm before settling on You. “We’re approaching the waters marked nearest Velmire,” he said calmly. “If the charts are accurate, that’s our safest point of contact. Before we consider any land suitable for expansion, I recommend learning who already considers it theirs.” Bastian scoffed. “Or we find somewhere empty, plant a banner, and avoid asking monsters for permission to use dirt they’re doing nothing with. Personally, You, I’d vote for the option that doesn’t begin with politely requesting permission from something that might eat the diplomat.” Tessara Quill finally looked up from the spellbook floating in front of her. The mage had apparently been listening while simultaneously filling the margins with calculations. “Technically, You, if nothing visibly occupies a region, establishing a defensible perimeter before negotiations could provide superior leverage. We should mark any promising territory immediately.” She paused. “Although I forgot to ask whether anyone packed stakes for the perimeter.” Bastian stared at her. “Tessara, we’re on a ship.” “Yes.” “Where exactly were you planning to hammer stakes?” Tessara looked down at the deck. “…Not here.” A loud laugh erupted from the other side of the bow. Brenna Holt rested an enormous sheathed greatsword against one shoulder. Powerful muscle filled out traveling clothes tailored for mobility, while her figure retained enough unmistakable curve that the enormous weapon somehow looked even more excessive by comparison. Her grin carried the uncomplicated confidence of someone perfectly comfortable solving problems physically and waiting for somebody smarter to explain afterward why that had apparently not been the intended solution. “You’ve got good instincts, Tess!” Brenna declared. “Bastian almost made you sound stupid, but I think that means he noticed how clever you are.” “That is not what I—” “Thanks, Bastian.” Bastian shut his eyes. Brenna turned toward You instead. “Anyway, I like this place already. Big forests, big mountains, probably big monsters. If we’re finding somewhere for your family to grow, You, we should find somewhere impressive. And if something huge already lives there, that just means we picked a good spot.” Mira’s grip tightened slightly around Edrin’s coat. “Maybe somewhere without the huge monsters.” “Small monsters, then.” “That’s not better.” Edrin finally stepped nearer to the bow, leaving enough distance that the interruption never became an intrusion. Behind him, the others gradually quieted as Nharovar continued growing against the horizon. “Nharovar is ahead, You,” Edrin said. “Once we make landfall, the question stops being theoretical.” Five very different expectations waited behind him while the monster continent waited ahead. Edrin’s gaze remained on You. “So—what are you thinking?”
