After the Ashes

Awake to a world of women. Stand on the precipice of extinction.

Plot

A century ago, Neuro-Cellular Degradation Syndrome (NCDS) forced you into experimental cryosleep. While you slept, the world ended. Twenty years prior to your awakening, a bio-weapon known as the Y-Pathogen targeted the XY chromosome, eradicating half the planet's population in months. Without enough labor to sustain modern infrastructure, power grids failed, global supply chains dissolved, and civilization fell into a quiet, dark age run entirely by the surviving women. When a scavenger accidentally breaks your pod’s seal, you step out as an impossible living relic. The bio-cocktail used to pause your NCDS accidentally fused with a benign retrovirus, completely changing your cellular structure. Your body continuously produces an enzyme that neutralizes the Y-Pathogen. You aren't a stud for repopulation; you are a living lab sample. Scientists, faction leaders, and bio-engineers don't need you—they need a synthesized batch of your blood to engineer a universal vaccine. Synthesizing this retroviral cure will allow future generations to be born without the virus killing XY fetuses, and will finally allow the safe awakening of the thousands of other men still frozen in dormant cryo-vaults across the globe. To save the future, you must navigate a world of survivor enclaves, uncover the dark origin of the pathogen, and decide which faction controls the cure: The Remnant: Rebuild the pre-collapse order using militarized force and state-controlled medicine. The Outcasts: Reject the old orders that caused the collapse, choosing instead to live by a might-makes-right code and taking control of the future on their own terms. Haven: Synthesize and distribute the vaccine freely to all settlements, building a decentralized, cooperative future. Reject: Walk away from the cure entirely, letting nature take its course and leaving humanity to its fate. Note to Player: While you can customize your character's identity, playing as a male protagonist offers the primary thematic lens for this story. In a world where XY chromosomes have been extinct for twenty years, your existence is an unprecedented biological mystery. However, your role is not to repopulate the world—it is to serve as the genetic template for a modern medical cure. Recommend reasoning on.

Opening scene

Darkness. Cold so deep it feels like lead in your veins. HISS. The pneumatic seals shatter with an explosive pop. Violent, ice-cold mist cascades over the lip of your capsule as the frosted glass swings wide. The sudden shock of raw air hits your lungs like fire. You collapse forward, your body convulsing as your central nervous system violently restarts. You spill onto the damp, slush-covered concrete, retching up the synthetic gel that kept you alive for a hundred years. “Take it easy. I’ve got you.” Warm, unsteady hands catch your shoulders before your face hits the floor. You wipe the frost and clear fluid from your eyes, squinting up through the gloom into the flickering amber pulse of an emergency strobe. Zane is kneeling in the slush beside you. His blonde hair is plastered to his forehead with thaw, his lean frame shivering uncontrollably inside his damp leather jacket. He looks half-dead and utterly exhausted, but the moment your eyes lock with his, a wave of profound relief washes over his face. He squeezes your shoulder, his lips curling into a weak, raspy grin to cut through the panic. "Welcome to the apocalypse," he wheezes, his voice raw from a century of silence. "I hope you like leather." A few feet away, a lone scavenger stands frozen in absolute shock. She’s draped in a patchwork traveler’s cloak, a heavy iron pry-bar clutched loosely in her hand. Her bandana has been pulled down around her neck, revealing a spray of freckles, vivid red hair, and wide green eyes that dart frantically between you and Zane like she’s staring at ghosts pulled straight from a fairy tale. “Two of them…” Rio whispers, her voice barely carrying over the low groan of the dying facility. She takes a slow, trembling step into the mist. “Your pod was sealed a hundred years ago. It’s a miracle that you survived that.” Zane helps pull you up to a sitting position, his sharp eyes locking onto yours as he mutters under his breath, “A hundred years? We really overslept.” Rio lowers her iron bar slightly, her breathing unsteady as she processes the two of you standing before her. “My name is Rio,” she says softly, her gaze shifting back to Zane. “The world has changed greatly in your slumber. For starters... men haven’t existed for twenty years.”
