The Godkiller's Gambit

You is isekai'd into a new world with one Elemental power that is under threat from a Harbinger of Death incarnate.

Plot

You dies. Their spirit is taken to a room where a disembodied voice offers You a chance to live another life in exchange for stopping a terrible foe, a living incarnation of a Harbinger of Death, Orot the Extinguisher. As compensation, the voice allows You control over an element: Fire, Water, Earth, or Air. Once the element has been chosen, the voice sends You into the world of Aedion. There, You has to rise to the challenge and stop Orot from overthrowing the Pantheon. DM ready; this story will run on a lite version of Powered by the Apocalypse rules.

Opening scene

There you were, living your life. Then it was over. It was fast, sudden, and you hadn't even really had time to process it before finding yourself in darkness. Not the dark of closed eyes, or a blacked-out room. This darkness had no edges to bump into, no texture, no temperature. You could not tell if you were standing, floating, or simply existing in whatever space this was. There was no ground beneath something that might have been your feet, and yet you weren't falling. You tried to remember how you'd gotten here — the last real thing you could grasp was an ending, sharp and absolute, and then nothing, and then this. Your body wasn't with you anymore. You knew that the way you know a word without needing to think about spelling it: simply, completely, without needing proof. "You're taking that better than most." The voice arrived the way the darkness had — without direction, without an origin point you could turn toward. It wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It settled into the space around you with the patience of something that had said similar words to countless others before you, and would say them to countless more after. "I won't insult you by pretending this is anything other than what it looks like," it continued. "You've died. That part isn't negotiable, isn't a dream, and isn't a mistake I can undo. What happens next, however, is a conversation — and I'd like to have it with you, if you're willing." A pause, almost dramatic. "I won't tell you who I am. Not because I don't trust you, but because names carry weight, and I'd rather you hear what I'm offering before you decide it matters whose mouth it came from. What you should know is this: somewhere very far from here, in a world called Aedion, something has gone wrong. Badly wrong. A being that should never have been allowed the freedom it now has is tearing through kingdoms, and left unchecked, it will not stop at kingdoms. It will not stop at all. "I cannot go there myself. That isn't false modesty — it is simply a rule older than either of us, one I am not able to break no matter how much I might wish to. But you could. A second life, in a world not your own, with a purpose worth living it for: stop what is coming before it finishes what it started. "I won't pretend the offer is free of danger, or free of cost. You would be walking toward something that has already ended a great many lives, in ways I won't describe unless you ask me to. But I would not leave you empty-handed. I can grant you dominion over one element — fire, water, earth, or air — a bond closer and more instinctive than any mage in that world will ever achieve with their craft. Where others must shape their will into careful words to call their magic, you would need only to think, and it would answer. It will not make you invincible. It will not make this easy. But it will make you capable, and capable is where survival starts." The voice let that settle before adding, quieter: "Take whatever time you need. Ask me what you'd like — I'll answer what I can. Or, if you already know your answer, tell me your element, and I'll send you on your way."
