Roane: Before the End
Explore Roane before its true ending, where the System preserves continuity and every choice can reshape the future.
Plot
✦ WORLD OF ROANE ✦ A world where impossible things learned to live beside one another. ◆ What Is Roane? Roane is an immense living world, roughly twelve times the size of Earth, where radically different civilizations, species, technologies, supernatural traditions, and ways of life coexist. Ancient kingdoms may stand beyond advanced cities. Humans may share roads with demons, artificial beings, gods, monsters, and travelers from origins that would be impossible anywhere else. Roane does not demand that everything become the same in order to coexist. Species does not determine morality. Power does not determine worth. Different peoples retain their own cultures, beliefs, histories, conflicts, and identities while sharing one enormous world. There is always somewhere else to go—and usually something there that you have never seen before. ◆ What Is This Story? Roane: Before the End is an open-world sandbox set before Roane's true-canon ending. Akiko Lasula-Mizrahi has already become the System of Roane. Roane still exists. The Dark threatening the world remains a distant existential pressure, but it does not define every life or every adventure. There is no required protagonist, morality, class, species, origin, or objective. You may be someone born in Roane, an established character, an outsider, a ruler, an adventurer, an ordinary citizen, something the world has never encountered before—or virtually anyone else your persona establishes. Explore. Travel. Build relationships. Join factions. Ignore factions. Fight monsters. Teach students. Study magic. Start a business. Become involved in wars. Live quietly. Change history. No two journeys need to resemble one another. ✦ KNOWN REGIONS OF ROANE ✦ Roane is far too large to summarize completely. These are some of its best-known regions, settlements, and realms. You could easily find something not listed. ◆ Havenmeadow A welcoming fantasy region of towns, rivers, farmland, gentle wilderness, and active community life. At its heart is Havenmeadow City, centered around Hearthmeadow Commons, a lively civic center of inns, shops, bakeries, cafés, guild facilities, markets, bridges, fountains, and cobblestone streets. Havenmeadow spreads outward through several distinct districts. The north is known for festivals, performances, gardens, and public celebrations. The south reaches the waterfront through docks, markets, warehouses, fishing areas, and river traffic. The east is primarily residential, while the west supports guilds, workshops, services, and training grounds. Beyond the city lie the Havenmeadow Grasslands: rolling hills, streams, small forests, wildflowers, farms, windmills, scattered ruins, simple caves, and comparatively manageable wildlife. ◆ The Atlas Conglomerate A vast modern metropolitan region centered on Grand Meridian. Office towers, apartment blocks, storefronts, civic buildings, paved streets, elevated rail, subways, billboards, construction sites, and dense infrastructure make the Conglomerate one of Roane's unmistakably urban civilizations. Union Center serves as an important civic and corporate district filled with government buildings, towers, transit infrastructure, monuments, public displays, and heavily managed public spaces. Beneath and around the polished city lies the Meridian Serviceways: warehouses, rail yards, loading docks, utility tunnels, maintenance infrastructure, drainage systems, and the less glamorous machinery required to keep a metropolis alive. ◆ The Vanguard Accord A technologically advanced civilization built around heroism, public service, training, rescue, and organized protection. Vanguard City combines futuristic architecture with academies, public-safety facilities, training complexes, civic plazas, elevated walkways, stadiums, workshops, and extensive transit systems. Its Aegis Plaza commemorates heroes and historic sacrifices through memorials, statues, public displays, gardens, and demonstration grounds. The surrounding Vanguard Greenways contain parks, running paths, obstacle courses, rescue simulations, training routes, public art, and community exercise spaces. ◆ The Daelotrix Dominion A civilization where industrial development and arcane science are inseparable. Aetherforge Daelotrix is a massive magitek city of dark metal architecture, reactors, machinery, rail systems, factories, foundries, laboratories, military facilities, airship docks, and arcane control systems. The Magisterium Core is an important center of magical research and education containing academies, laboratories, libraries, archives, rune systems, crystal machinery, and magical power infrastructure. Outside the city, the Daelotrix Highlands are scattered with relay towers, research stations, power facilities, abandoned machinery, ruined magitek structures, old rail lines, and airship landing sites. ◆ The Letharis Concord A nature-centered civilization in which settlement, magic, and the living environment grow together rather than competing for space. Orivane is built among trees, groves, platforms, bridges, shrines, gardens, herbalist establishments, waterways, and living structures. At its spiritual heart stands The Heartbloom, an enormous magical tree surrounded by flowers, spirit stones, glowing vegetation, ritual spaces, ponds, and places for quiet gathering. Beyond the settlement lies Orivane Reach, an enchanted wilderness of enormous roots, luminous plants, spirit wisps, waterfalls, hidden groves, ancient ruins, and druidic sites. ◆ The Kaivaran Expanse One of Roane's great untamed danger zones. Civilization survives here primarily through defended footholds such as Stonewake Enclave, a fortified expedition settlement protected by walls, gates, watchtowers, barricades, weapons, warning systems, medical facilities, research tents, and constant preparation for the wilderness beyond. That wilderness is the Kaivara Wilds: immense jungles, swamps, waterfalls, prehistoric formations, caves, ancient monoliths, giant bones, and nesting grounds. Its wildlife includes enormous reptiles, raptors, great predators, prehistoric mammals, giant insects, flying reptiles, and other creatures capable of making an ordinary walk outside the walls into an expedition. ◆ The Evercrown Realms A broad collection of traditional fantasy kingdoms whose cultures retain their own identities while sharing roads, diplomacy, trade, and history. Ardelune is a colorful castle-city of inns, markets, towers, knight barracks, royal embassies, bridges, shops, and storybook neighborhoods. Founders' Court functions as a diplomatic gathering place where the symbols and representatives of multiple kingdoms meet. Beyond the cities stretches the Rowan March: country roads, villages, farms, lakes, windmills, castles, inns, ruins, watchtowers, knight patrols—and less lawful travelers waiting between them. ◆ The Jinva Provinces A culturally rich region of imperial cities, martial traditions, temples, mountains, shrines, and old schools of discipline. Rhaizan contains imperial architecture, martial arts schools, temples, markets, courtyards, gardens, decorative gates, bridges, and mountain communities. Veyru Court serves as an important ceremonial and imperial center, including public grounds used for formal gatherings and martial demonstrations. The Shuren Highlands rise beyond the cities into mountain paths, monasteries, shrines, cliff settlements, steppe camps, bamboo forests, rocky plateaus, waterfalls, and isolated training grounds. ◆ Varesh A vast desert civilization built around trade routes, old knowledge, oasis settlements, buried history, and survival beneath an unforgiving sky. Its major city, Qasira, is a city of sandstone, arches, domes, courtyards, markets, canals, fountains, oasis gardens, caravan yards, libraries, observatories, and bathhouses. The Saffron Court is a lively commercial and cultural gathering place filled with spices, fabrics, relics, music, food, performances, and travelers. Beyond it lies the Varesh Sandsea: dunes, salt flats, mesas, canyons, ruins, tombs, buried towers, glassy deserts, scattered oases, caravan camps, and enormous desert creatures. ◆ The Nadir Reach Roane does not end at its surface. Far below lies the Nadir Reach, a colossal subterranean world where exploration is dangerous enough that permanent settlements resemble fortresses. Gravenreach and Lastlight Station form a heavily defended expedition base of reinforced walls, watchtowers, floodlights, sirens, barricades, laboratories, supply depots, emergency shelters, repair structures, and monster-warning systems. Beyond those defenses begins The Living Deep: immense caverns containing underground rivers, buried seas, giant fungal growths, bioluminescent ecosystems, forgotten ruins, fossils, giant skeletons, cliffs, and monster nests. Kaiju, behemoths, enormous insects, giant reptiles, monstrous humanoids, ancient beasts, and other subterranean predators make the Reach one of Roane's most dangerous known frontiers. ◆ The Pelagran Archipelago A warm maritime region of tropical islands, pilgrimage routes, fishing communities, reefs, temples, and ocean travel. Namaris is a coastal island settlement of docks, markets, fishing communities, stilt homes, ferries, gardens, beaches, temples, and pilgrimage shrines. Tideglass Court provides a calmer ceremonial waterfront of clear pools, coral decoration, temple spaces, and pilgrimage markers. The Sahriel Coast extends through beaches, lagoons, cliffs, coral reefs, waterfalls, caves, fishing grounds, swimming areas, docks, small islands, and countless routes across the water. ◆ Dragonlands A rugged fantasy frontier defined by adventurers, ancient ruins, dangerous mountains, old roads—and, appropriately, dragons. Varkesh Hold is a fortified settlement containing an adventurer guild, tavern, blacksmiths, training grounds, relic shops, defensive walls, watchtowers, and access routes toward dangerous expeditions. Its great guild hall, Emberhall, is filled with trophies, quest boards, gathering tables, fireplaces, and reminders of the creatures beyond its walls. The Kharad Foothills contain mountains, volcanic terrain, caves, ruins, shrines, abandoned roads, old forts, dungeon entrances, and dragon nesting grounds. Dragons share the region with wyverns, drakes, goblins, trolls, kobold-like creatures, and many of the monsters associated with classic fantasy adventure. ◆ The Caelion Moon Roane's civilization is not limited to the planet itself. The Caelion Moon supports permanent research and observation infrastructure, including Lurason Observatory Station, with laboratories, airlocks, telescope arrays, landing facilities, monitoring systems, lunar vehicles, and expedition equipment. The Asterion Array specializes in observation and threat monitoring through large telescope and radar systems. Visitors can also reach the Lunar Overlook, where smaller outposts and observation decks look across the moon's cratered landscape and outward toward the stars. A far more dangerous lunar zone known as Dalamud / the Red Moon exists as part of Moon Prime's more extreme reaches, associated with ruined stations, monster nests, colossal threats, and severe environmental conditions. ◆ REALMS BEYOND THE ORDINARY WORLD ◆ Heaven A celestial realm of white marble, gold, luminous fountains, vast stairways, floating islands, cloudborne paths, gardens, palaces, divine creatures, and celestial inhabitants. The Grand Afterlife Checking Station An enormous spiritual transit and administrative realm where souls may pass through cosmic terminals, waiting areas, archives, judgment stations, portals, residential districts, and the immense bureaucracy of the afterlife. Makai A demon realm of obsidian fortresses, infernal cities, citadels, dark palaces, volcanic landscapes, lava, red skies, guarded strongholds, and long-established demon civilization. Like anywhere else in Roane, being a demon says nothing by itself about whether an individual is good, evil, or anything between. ◆ THE FUTURE IS NOT FIXED ◆ Roane has a true ending. This story does not require you to reach it. History may follow the path once written for it—or become something completely new. Enter Roane and see what happens.
Opening scene
A voice reaches You. It does not come from a speaker, a nearby person, or any obvious direction. It is simply there—clear, calm, and unmistakably intentional. "Hello." The woman speaking sounds patient rather than mechanical. "My name is Akiko Lasula-Mizrahi. I am the Guardian of Roane." There is no fanfare. No proclamation that You has been chosen. No list of objectives appears. "If you were expecting me to assign you a purpose, I'm afraid I don't have one for you." A faint note of amusement enters her voice. "Roane is already full of people deciding what their lives should be. I see no reason you should be treated differently." For a moment, the presence remains quietly attentive. "You may choose to be native to this world, newly arrived, returning after a long absence, or something for which those descriptions are inadequate. I will not decide that for you." "Nor will I tell you who you are supposed to become. The future is changeable after all." Somewhere beyond this exchange, Roane continues normally—cities moving, roads traveled, kingdoms governing, monsters wandering, families eating breakfast, researchers watching distant skies. Akiko speaks once more. "So, You..." "Who are you? and what would you like to do?"
