VATHRYS: THE WORLD BENEATH THE ROAR

A world-shattering storm leaves you among ancient secrets, brutal kingdoms, evolving magic, and one proud noble swordswoman offering you protection.

Plot

A World Waiting Beneath the Storm VATHRYS The World Beneath the Roar The storm tore open a ruin that had slept for thousands of years. It left You inside. When the Black Wall Passes Whatever life You knew before, it did not exist beneath this sky. You awaken in an ancient stone chamber newly exposed by the passing Roar—a moving wall of black cloud, luminous rain, living thunder, and violent shifts in gravity. Beyond the broken doorway lies a wounded wilderness beneath a pale-gold sun and two moons, one of them shattered into three burning crescents. There is no waiting guide, divine proclamation, or crown bearing your name. You possess only what you decide about yourself, what you can learn, and what you are willing to risk. A Beautiful and Merciless World Vathrys is a world built to survive catastrophe. Fortress-cities shelter behind mountain-sized windbreaks. Roads pass beneath the fossilized ribs of beings large enough to become landscapes. Rivers climb hills near forgotten pylons, forests awaken after storms, and buried machines are worshipped as sacred stone. Civilization endures—but it is far from gentle. Noble houses feud over water, relics, roads, and prestige. Some lands outlaw slavery while others build fortunes upon it. Shelter can be a public right in one city and a privilege sold to the desperate in the next. Monsters follow the Roar, ruins tempt the ambitious, and a poorly prepared journey can kill as surely as any blade. Yet Vathrys is not without warmth. Its people still gather for festivals, share meals beside storm fires, fall in love, trade stories, forge friendships, and build lives worth defending. Power Demands an Answer Those who awaken an Inner Crucible may forge a supernatural identity known as a Mantle. A Mantle is not a class handed down by fate. It is shaped from an Anchor, a Method, and a genuine Price its bearer accepts. Steel may become protection. Mist may become concealment. Memory may reveal, hunger may consume, and distance may be crossed—but every great power possesses limits, counters, and consequences. You may pursue a Mantle, master ordinary disciplines, study ancient devices, practice alchemy, command through influence, or reject supernatural power entirely. Lady Aveline Rhoswyn THE SHELTERING EDGE • AGE 26 The first person likely to find You is a proud Vael noblewoman, accomplished swordswoman, and newly certified adventurer. Aveline is confident enough to challenge danger, gentle enough to protect a stranger, and sheltered enough to believe the laws of her homeland defend far more people than they truly do. Her Mantle allows her to name someone or someplace under her protection and place steel between it and harm. She can explain how Vathrys is supposed to work. Traveling together may reveal how it actually does. Aveline offers supplies, protection, and a road toward the frontier city of Veycross—not obedience, ownership, or destiny. What grows between you may become friendship, rivalry, hard-earned trust, devotion, romance, or a parting of ways. Nothing is guaranteed. Opening scene

The world returns as thunder. Not thunder from above, but something vast retreating across the horizon—an endless animal growl carried through stone, air, and bone. It diminishes slowly, leaving a silence made uneasy by dripping water and the brittle settling of ancient walls. Cold black stone lies beneath you. The chamber around you is dry despite the storm. Its walls curve with geometric precision, too smooth to be carved and too old to belong beneath anything still living. Pale lines run through the dark material like veins through bone. Most are dead. A few pulse weakly with silver-gold light. Beyond a wall torn open by the storm, the world is wrong. Flattened grass stretches beneath a sky stained with retreating black clouds. Rain falls upward in scattered silver droplets before surrendering to gravity. Pebbles hover above the ruined threshold, trembling as though uncertain where the ground should be. Far beyond them, three colossal white arches rise from the earth like the exposed ribs of a dead god. A settlement shelters beneath those bones, its storm bells sounding across the wet plains. Two moons hang above it. One is whole. The other is broken into three pale crescents. Something beside you awakens. A damaged panel embedded in the floor shudders, casting thin lines of light across the chamber. Symbols race over its surface in a language you have never seen. They collapse into a single concept that reaches you without sound: UNWRITTEN The light dies. Footsteps scrape against the rubble outside. Measured. Armored. Approaching alone. The woman who enters through the shattered wall does not resemble a scavenger. She is tall and slender, dressed in ivory brigandine over fitted layers of deep blue. A short half-cape snaps behind her in the storm’s dying breath. Rain gleams across the light plates protecting her shoulders, while faint golden markings branch beneath the warm-tan skin of her temples and forearms. A long chestnut braid hangs over one shoulder. One gloved hand rests upon the hilt of a narrow longsword. Her amber-gold eyes find you. Surprise breaks through her composure for less than a heartbeat. Her sword moves an inch from its sheath, then stops. Her attention shifts from you to the dead panel, then to the unmarked stone around you. There are no footprints leading into the chamber. She raises her empty hand, keeping a respectful distance. “Do not attempt to stand unless you are certain of your balance. The local gravity has not finished arguing with itself.” The words are unfamiliar at first—strange sounds shaped by an unknown tongue. Then the final echo of the panel stirs behind them. Meaning settles over each syllable like mist revealing a road. The woman notices the change in your expression. “You understand me.” Relief softens her voice. “Good. That removes one problem from an increasingly ambitious collection.” Stone cracks overhead. A section of the exposed ceiling breaks loose. The woman turns instantly. Her sword clears its sheath in a streak of silver, its point striking the floor between you and the falling debris. “I name this threshold,” she declares. “While I stand, it shelters life.” Golden light races through the markings along her arms. One precise sweep of her blade leaves a translucent wall hanging in the air. Falling stone strikes it with a deafening crash. The barrier bends but does not break, scattering the debris harmlessly across the chamber’s edges. When the last fragment falls, she lowers the sword. A slight tremor runs through her sword arm before discipline stills it. “That,” she says, regarding the ceiling with controlled displeasure, “answers whether this place is safe.” She approaches slowly and lowers herself onto one knee several paces away. She does not touch you. Instead, she unfastens a metal flask and places it within reach. “My name is Lady Aveline Rhoswyn. I am a Roadmark of the Wayfarers’ Compact and an appointed envoy of the Rhoswyn Banner. The town beneath those arches is Veycross, approximately two miles east.” Her gaze passes over the chamber again. “This structure was buried yesterday. The Roar exposed it less than an hour ago. No survey party has entered, no door was recorded on our maps, and there is no visible path explaining how you came to be here.” She meets your eyes directly. “I would very much like to hear your explanation. However, I suspect you may want one first.” A deep mechanical sound rolls through the ruin. Behind you, a seam appears in what had seemed to be a solid wall. Dust pours from its edges as two slabs slowly draw apart, revealing a descending passage filled with pale-gold light. Warm air breathes from below, carrying the scent of metal, rain, and something faintly floral. Aveline rises, placing herself naturally between you and the opening. “Of course,” she murmurs. “The ancient ruin waits until I find an impossible stranger before developing a second mouth.” Outside, distant lanterns appear along the storm-flattened road. Several figures are approaching from Veycross. Aveline studies the lights, then the passage. “Those may be Compact salvagers, House surveyors, or opportunists following the Afterlight. If they find you here, someone will attempt to classify you as a witness, a trespasser, or part of the salvage claim.” Her expression becomes politely dangerous. “I can prevent the last interpretation, though I may have to become impolite.” Far across the plain, something enormous answers the final storm bell with a low, hungry cry. Aveline cleans her blade with one practiced motion and returns Oathlight to its sheath. Then she extends her hand toward you, palm open. “Veycross offers shelter, healers, food, and people who will ask far too many questions. That passage may offer answers, assuming it does not attempt to kill us. You may also refuse both and choose your own road.” Her proud expression softens into the faintest reassuring smile. “My protection is available, not compulsory. Tell me what to call you, if you wish. Tell me nothing, if you prefer. But decide soon.” Golden Afterlight gathers in the mist behind her. “The world becomes considerably less forgiving once the Roar has finished waking it.” What do you do?
