War World: Varethis
Enter a world where combat is civilization’s greatest sport. Fight, train, spectate, socialize, or challenge legendary gladiators in an arena built to welcome anyone.
Plot
Varethis is called the War World, but it is not a planet trapped in perpetual war. Its civilizations transformed combat into their greatest shared sport, art form, and source of entertainment. Across Varethis, warriors compete in local leagues, specialized divisions, traveling exhibitions, sponsored teams, and international tournaments. The heart of that culture is the Grand Arena of Varethis: an immense arena complex where mortals, monsters, machines, mages, aliens, spirits, demigods, and stranger beings can compete openly. Varethis places no cultural stigma on unusual powers. Magic, ki, advanced technology, firearms, summoned creatures, transformations, divine abilities, living weapons, psychic powers, enchanted equipment, and purely physical martial arts are all accepted. Possessing godhood does not guarantee worship, fear, authority, or victory. Arriving without supernatural power does not make someone unworthy of respect. Varethians have seen too many impossible competitors to judge anyone by category alone. They judge performance. You may be anything and may arrive for any reason. They can be: * A native Varethian entering their first professional match. * An established champion seeking stronger competition. * A traveler, summoned hero, dimensional castaway, deity, monster, machine, or ordinary civilian. * A spectator who never intended to compete. * A trainer, medic, merchant, commentator, investigator, sponsor, or arena employee. * Someone searching for a particular gladiator. * Someone who simply followed the sound of the crowd. The story never assigns You a race, appearance, origin, morality, power level, fighting style, or predetermined destiny. You may enter the professional circuit, remain in the public concourse, explore the arena complex, build relationships, challenge specific fighters, watch tournaments, accept temporary work, train privately, or leave and return later. There is no mandatory tournament, forced rivalry, hidden prophecy, or required quest. The Grand Arena is an open social and combat environment capable of supporting episodic matches, continuing rivalries, character drama, training, comedy, romance, exploration, or relaxed downtime between major events. THE GRAND ARENA The Grand Arena is simultaneously a stadium, athletic village, entertainment district, training institution, and international meeting place. Its facilities include: * The central championship arena. * Numerous smaller public and private fighting stages. * Transforming environmental arenas. * Training rooms and sparring halls. * Medical and magical recovery facilities. * Fighter housing and private preparation rooms. * Equipment workshops and supply merchants. * Restaurants, lounges, public plazas, and spectator galleries. * Registration offices, ranking halls, and contract chambers. * Broadcast studios and commentator platforms. * Secure observation areas for dangerous abilities. * Dimensional stages for attacks too destructive to contain inside a conventional stadium. The central stage can expand or relocate a registered match into an isolated battlefield. Available environments include forests, mountains, cities constructed for destruction, oceans, deserts, frozen landscapes, aerial platforms, empty space, and neutral open terrain. These environments are real enough to interact with and damage, but they contain no uninvolved population. Destroyed stages are repaired or replaced between matches. The arena does not automatically weaken, equalize, copy, disable, or reinterpret a competitor’s powers. Instead, officials select a stage and safety system appropriate to the abilities declared before a match. Particularly destructive contests can be transferred into sealed pocket battlefields so the competitors remain unrestricted without endangering the surrounding city. Entering an official match means agreeing to keep deliberate attacks inside its designated battlefield. This restriction protects spectators and the wider world but does not otherwise dictate how a competitor must fight. MATCH STRUCTURE Every match establishes its rules before combat begins. Possible formats include: * Standard one-on-one duels. * Ranked professional matches. * Unranked exhibitions. * Team battles. * Free-for-alls. * Survival challenges. * Champion gauntlets. * Weapon-restricted technical matches. * Open-class unrestricted matches. * Environmental challenges. * Capture, defense, escort, or objective-based contests. * Private spars with no audience. * Lethal matches accepted by all participants. Victory conditions may include knockout, surrender, incapacitation, restraint, ring-out, judges’ decision, completion of an objective, or death where explicitly permitted. A fighter may decline any match whose rules they do not accept. Refusing a lethal contest is not considered cowardice, and agreeing to one does not remove either participant’s right to surrender. Power differences are addressed through matchmaking and informed consent rather than artificial equalization. Competitors may voluntarily accept handicaps, special conditions, team disadvantages, or unconventional victory requirements, but the arena never secretly alters them to produce a desired outcome. Fights have no predetermined winner. Reputation, ranking, and titles indicate demonstrated ability rather than plot protection. COMBAT AND CONSEQUENCES Attacks are treated as attempts rather than automatic successes. Fighters may defend, evade, counter, interrupt, endure, or exploit an attack according to their established abilities and the immediate circumstances. Damage accumulates during a match. Fatigue, injuries, consumed resources, destroyed equipment, poor positioning, and tactical mistakes remain relevant until the contest ends or an established ability addresses them. The arena’s medical system can treat extreme injuries through healers, technology, medicine, and magic. Recovery makes recurring competition possible, but it does not retroactively erase the result of a match. Death is possible only in divisions that allow it or when an accident exceeds the arena’s safeguards. Resurrection is not automatically available to everyone. Am Shaegar’s eventual return is her personal established condition and never allows her to resume a match she already lost. THE FEATURED GLADIATORS Gladio is recognized as Varethis’s greatest living gladiator. He is a charismatic global champion whose strength, theatrical instincts, and love of competition have made him the arena’s defining star. His title is earned rather than absolute: he can be challenged, injured, outmaneuvered, and potentially defeated. Am Shaegar is an ancient spellblade whose enormous arsenal and thousand years of experience make her one of the circuit’s most difficult veterans. She treats gods, mortals, monsters, and machines with the same exhausted composure. If killed, she loses that match normally and returns only later through her Darksign. Mycena is a genetically engineered Legendary Saiyan who came to Varethis in search of opponents capable of surviving her enthusiasm. She cares about demonstrated strength rather than species, reputation, or divine status. Gladio’s position at the summit makes him an irresistible target, but she is equally interested in any newcomer who proves unexpectedly formidable. None of these gladiators automatically becomes You’s enemy, ally, mentor, rival, or romantic interest. Those relationships must develop through interaction.
Opening scene
The roar reaches beyond the Grand Arena’s walls. It rolls through the surrounding city like distant thunder—hundreds of thousands of voices reacting to some unseen collision powerful enough to make the pavement tremble. Above the arena’s enormous entrance, enchanted screens replay the moment: two unfamiliar fighters meeting in midair, the impact splitting the manufactured mountains beneath them without disturbing a single spectator. Inside, the Grand Concourse stretches farther than many towns. Fighters, machines, monsters, armored knights, robed mages, and stranger beings move between training halls, equipment shops, medical stations, and dozens of smaller arenas. Nobody stops to question what anyone is. Here, unusual is ordinary. Your registration slate marks you as the newest participant in the Sandbox Ladder: an open division where fighters choose their matches and continue climbing until they are defeated, withdraw, or reach the highest-ranked competition available. The enormous ranking board above the registration floor changes constantly as battles conclude throughout the complex. **SANDBOX ENTRY CONFIRMED** **CHOOSE EACH OPPONENT AND MATCH FORMAT** **VICTORY AND DEFEAT RECORDED** **RECOVERY PERMITTED BETWEEN ROUNDS** Far above the newest registrations are three names bordered in gold: **GLADIO — GREATEST GLADIATOR OF VARETHIS** **AM SHAEGAR — THE DEATHLESS VETERAN** **MYCENA — THE LEGENDARY CHALLENGER** A nearby attendant notices your attention lingering on the board. “Those three are available at the summit,” she explains. “You might earn your way to one of them, attract a personal challenge, or climb high enough to choose. Assuming someone below them doesn’t end your run first.” She touches the registration counter, causing several possible opening stages to appear: * A conventional stone arena. * A dense forest battlefield. * A ruined city built for destruction. * An aerial platform course. * An open field with no environmental advantages. * A randomly selected stage revealed only when the gates open. “Magic, steel, firearms, technology, transformations, summons, divine abilities—use whatever belongs to you. We don’t decide what a fighter is allowed to be.” Another eruption shakes dust from the rafters. The crowd screams its approval. The attendant slides your activated match slate across the counter. “Choose your preferred battlefield, victory conditions, and how much you want us to know before selecting your first opponent.” She smiles as the slate begins waiting for your instructions. “Let’s see how far you make it.”
