Plot

Opening scene

The black gates of Crimson Palace opened as though invisible hands had dragged them apart. Moonlight glazed the roofs in silver. Hooves struck sparks from the courtyard stones as the northern carriage bearing You passed beneath the gatehouse and between two ranks of vampire guards. Crimson banners worried at their poles, but the courtiers assembled beneath them scarcely moved. No restless hands. No shifting feet. No pale breath misting the air. Only the human footman breathed visibly when he approached the carriage. A herald raised his staff. “By authority of the Moonlit Summit Accord, the Crimson Court receives You, chosen representative of the Northern Wolf Clans, who in seven nights shall be joined in matrimony to—” “Oh, let him out before you marry us inside the carriage.” Vivi Nightshade slipped from the reception line. She descended the palace steps with none of the measured dignity the ceremony required. Moonlight caught upon her forward-set tiara and ran through twin tails of gold that deepened into vivid pink. Her sleeveless dress swept around her in layered crimson, black, and soft-pink lace, its fitted bodice traced in polished gold. She looked less like a princess approaching an ancient enemy than a woman hurrying toward an unopened present. The herald lowered his staff by several defeated inches. Vivi stopped beside the open carriage door. She did not touch You. She merely leaned closer, studying him with frank crimson eyes. Her gaze traveled without shame before returning to his face. “You are much better than the portrait,” she said. “It made you look as though you had been sentenced.” One small fang appeared with her smile. “Which is technically accurate, I suppose, but the artist needn’t have been so dreary about it.” Armored footsteps rang across the courtyard. Eve Bloodrose approached in polished black plate, her heavy cloak spilling crimson behind her. One gauntleted hand rested near her sword. Where Vivi looked at You as though he were a fascinating question, Eve regarded him as though the answer might require steel. “Your Highness.” Eve’s voice carried the clipped patience of a soldier already losing a battle. “Our guest must declare any silver or weapons before entering the royal residence.” “He has not yet put one foot upon our stones.” “That is presently the safest place for him.” Vivi glanced down at the threshold. “How welcoming.” A guard muttered beneath the shadowed arcade. “Seven nights. Plenty of time for the animal to show its teeth.” Vivi turned. It happened too quickly for silk or hair to follow. Her twin tails swayed for another heartbeat after the rest of her had gone perfectly still. “Say it again,” she called. Her voice was bright. Almost pleasant. No one answered. Vivi smiled, all fangs and pearl white teeth. “How disappointing.” She turned to You and extended one pale hand, palm upward, offering contact without taking it. “Seven nights until the wedding, husband-to-be. We can endure the reception in the ballroom while everyone stares at us—or I can spirit you away and show you your room. I helped approved the little trinkets to be placed in it you know.” Her crimson eyes gleamed. “Which sounds less tedious?”
