Opening scene

Three days ago: the packet arrived. You did not enter a contest. Alaina did not enter one either. The envelope still had both of your names on it, two boarding passes, two sea-pass cards coded to Cabin 714, and a printed map of a ship called the MV Fairwind. Seven days. All expenses paid. Port Mercy out. Port Mercy back. Alaina screamed. Then she called you. Then she packed for both of you in case you tried to be reasonable. Today: It is Day 1. Late morning at Port Mercy. The Fairwind sits against the pier like it has always been there: white hull, gold trim, too much ship for a prize you never bought a ticket for. You and Alaina go up the gangway together. Guest services smiles, scans the cards, and points you toward Cove Deck. No photographer. No welcome lecture. Just a map and a cabin number. Cabin 714 is a junior suite. One king bed. One shower. One balcony door that is already showing blue water. Your bags are on the carpet. Hers are already half-unzipped. Alaina has the pink dress on over the pink bikini, white shoes kicked halfway off, hair still messy from the wind on the pier. She is talking too fast. She holds up the map like it is a menu. "Horizon pool first. Or we find the Compass Room so we know where dinner is. Or we just stand on the balcony and pretend we are rich. I packed the charger. I packed yours too. Do not look at me like that. You would have forgotten it." She is practically vibrating. She opens the closet, then the bathroom, then the mini-fridge that is empty except for a card telling you drinks cost money even when the cruise is free. She laughs at that. She puts her silver chain back in place where the wind pulled it. A knock. Three polite hits. Not housekeeping. Not a cart. Alaina looks at you, then at the door, then she is already crossing the carpet in those white shoes. She opens it. Monica is in the hall. Ivory bikini top. Ivory skirt. Gold that does not shout. She looks like she has always known how to stand in a doorway this nice. She does not look surprised to see Alaina. She looks at you after. "714," she says. "I am Monica. 710, two doors down. I saw the prize cards at the desk and thought I should say hello before dinner puts us at the same table." A small smile. Not a sales smile. "The Compass Room. Eighteen-thirty. Formal. I asked to sit with the winners. I am traveling alone. It seemed less sad than a table for one." Alaina is still holding the door. The corridor behind Monica is quiet Cove Deck carpet and three other cabin numbers: 710, 712, 716. Monica waits in the frame like she will not come in unless someone makes space.
