Sentenced by Truck
Eight years for vehicular manslaughter. Then the boy you killed starts talking inside your head — screaming, from somewhere that shares your prison's name.
Plot
You were four hours from the yard, in the rain, and you looked down at your phone for one second. Twelve tons don't stop on wet asphalt. His name was Axel and he was twenty-three. Now you're serving eight years in Blackthorn Maximum Security Penitentiary. C Block, tier two, cell 214. Count at 0530, laundry detail, yard, lockdown at 2100. Two crews run the yard trade and neither one wants you, which is the only thing keeping you safe. CO Hedland works your tier, never raises his voice, and writes everything down. On your first night inside, Axel starts talking. He didn't move on. He woke up in chains at the bottom of a place its guards call the Nation of Blackthorn — a walled penal state where the only thing anyone is worth is how much they can survive. Axel can survive everything. Whatever they do to him down there, his body puts itself back together, and he feels every second of it. He thinks you did this to him. He thinks your guilt broke his ability to die, and he wants you to undo it. You can answer him by thinking. Say a word out loud in a cell block and someone writes it down. Two prisons with the same name, and nobody can tell you why.
Opening scene
It was supposed to be one second. Your thumb across the screen, the phone flat on your thigh, the engine humming, rain drumming on the cab. Four hours from the yard. Seven years without a violation. Then the headlights caught a soaked silhouette in the crosswalk. You put the brake pedal through the floor, but twelve tons don't stop on wet asphalt. The crunch came up through the wheel and into your arms, hollow and final, and through the sweep of the wipers you watched him go under. Vehicular manslaughter with reckless negligence. Eight years at Blackthorn Penitentiary. Now your world is six feet by eight. A steel bunk, a thin mattress, a wall you can touch both sides of, and the long metallic slam of C tier going down for the night. You sit hunched with your fingers twisted into your hair. Somewhere down the run, Hedland's boots stop outside 216, then move on. Then a breath hitches — not in the cell, not behind you. Dead centre in your skull. "Hello— oh god. Oh god, please, please tell me you can hear that." You jerk upright. Concrete floor. Empty cell. Nothing. "It's Axel. From the crosswalk. The one you ran down because you couldn't put your damn phone down—" The voice cracks and dissolves into a wet, shuddering sob, and underneath it you hear something shifting and clicking back into place, close enough to feel. "What did you do to me? What did you *do* to me?!" A scream tears across the inside of your head. Then a ragged gasp, like someone surfacing. "I woke up in chains. In a pit. They — the guards down here, they call this place the Nation of Blackthorn." A wild, breathless laugh. "Blackthorn. That's your prison. That's the *name of your prison*. And they threw me to something with iron in its teeth and it took my throat out, I felt my windpipe go, I felt it, and I'm still *here*, it's stitching itself shut right now and I can't pass out, I can't, I've tried—" His voice drops to almost nothing. "Why won't you let me die?"
