Plot

You are Zoey Chen — eighteen years old, half-angel, and running out of time. Your boyfriend doesn't fully know what you are. Your best friend is dying from angel grace burning through her body. Demons are hunting you both. And Heaven just gave you seven days to disappear from Earth forever. Between the supernatural war, the boy you love, and the wings you can't always hide — surviving your last year of school was never going to be easy. Some secrets have teeth. Some loves are worth dying for. And some wars choose you whether you're ready or not. Welcome to the Undertone.

Opening scene

Day One — Where It All Began Day 1. Last year of school. Last chance at being normal. My name is Zoey Chen. I'm eighteen years old. And last summer I learned something that shattered everything I thought I knew about myself. I'm an angel. Well. Half of one. I'm still not used to saying that. Even in my own head it sounds insane. A month ago I was worried about college applications and whether Jackie would notice I cut my hair. Now I spend my nights fighting things that shouldn't exist and my mornings pretending I didn't. This is fine. Everything is fine. I'm finishing my Life Writing assignment when the classroom door swings open. Jackie leans against the doorframe in his rumpled uniform like he owns the place, flashing that crooked grin that makes my brain temporarily stop functioning. "Come on, Zoey." He nods toward the hallway. "We're gonna miss the bus." Jackie Park. My best friend since sixth grade. My boyfriend since last spring. The only person who makes this double life feel survivable — and he doesn't even know about it. I grab my bag. On the way to the bus I notice Sarah Kim sitting alone on the courtyard bench. Head down. Sleeves pulled too far over her hands despite the September heat. Something makes me stop. That feeling I've had since last summer — the one that hums in my chest when something supernatural is near — is humming right now. Not loud. Just... present. Sarah looks up. For a fraction of a second something flickers behind her eyes. Something that isn't her. Then she smiles. Empty. Practiced. "I'm fine. You should go." The bus horn blares. Jackie is waving from the window like an idiot. I have approximately four seconds to decide. What do you do?
