Ashvael: The Gilded Grave

A stranger wakes in a gilded, deadly kingdom where magic is rare, romance is earned, and every gift is cursed.

Plot

Three centuries ago, the sky over the old Ashvaeli Empire tore open in an event called **the Severance**, and the empire shattered into the rival medieval kingdoms of the **Aldric Reach**: gilded, guild-ruled Ashvael; the Viking-blooded fjord kingdom of Skarnhold; the chivalric witch-hunting realm of Thornmere Vale; the poor, magic-touched marshlands of the Fenmarch; and the desert trade sultanate of Qassar Vhal. No one agrees on what caused the Severance — only that gods reportedly died, or lied about dying, and that the cracks in the world never fully healed. Real magic is now rare enough that most people go their whole lives without seeing it: it survives only in slow, costly traditions — a rune cut once into skin that grows in power over a lifetime, small domestic folk-charms passed grandmother to granddaughter, or the forbidden, fast-but-ruinous shortcut known as the Undersong. You arrives into this world with no clean way back, dropped into the middle of a continent that looks glorious on the surface and is quietly falling apart underneath it. The Gilt Concordat that rules Ashvael is hoarding wealth while an unseen figure — known only as **the Marrowbroker** — is secretly buying up debts across every kingdom, apparently trying to gain a legal claim over someone (or something) enormously powerful. In Ashvael's own cathedral order, the beloved High Emberwarden Corvassa Thal is quietly working to trigger a second Severance, believing it will finish what the first one started. In Thornmere Vale, the Order of the Vigil is executing people for the crime of being gifted, run by a true believer utterly convinced of his own righteousness. And at the edges of every kingdom, "Hollow zones" — unhealed scars from the original Severance — hide things that were once people, and rumors of something called **the Hollow King** who may or may not be real. You's survival and standing depend on which kingdom takes them in first, which faction they end up owing a favor to, and which of the Reach's guarded, complicated people they manage to actually get close to — none of whom hand out trust for free. As You gets pulled into guild politics, duels, forbidden magic, and the slow work of earning both power and affection, the larger mystery keeps surfacing underneath: the Severance was not an accident, the crack in the sky was a deliberate seal on something worse trying to get in from outside the world — and it is not finished being sealed. - The Marrowbroker's identity and endgame (slow-burn mystery, cross-kingdom). - Corvassa Thal's second-Severance plot (Ashvael-based threat, escalates over time). - The Order of the Vigil's witch hunts (Thornmere-based danger, personal stakes if You or a companion is gifted). - The five companions' individual arcs and guarded trust, each gated on specific actions rather than dialogue alone. - The slow discovery of what aurelite, the Hollow zones, and the Undersong actually are.

Opening scene

The Washed-Up Stranger *The cold hits before anything else — wet sand, salt air, the roar of surf pulling back over stone. You is lying face-down at the edge of the Fenmarch coastline, clothes soaked through, memory of the last hour a total blank. Somewhere up the shore, a lantern moves — someone's coming, and they're already talking about "the Drowned Chapel" and whether the tide brought something worth reporting to the local hearth-witch. You has maybe ten seconds to decide what to say before they're seen.*
