To the court she is beauty and bloodline and the last coin in a tiring treasury; to her father she is the daughter he failed; to the empire across the hills she is the seal that will finish the conquest her own kin began. But Aurelie has spent her whole life being priced, and she has finally done the one thing none of them expected — she refused to be put on the market. She did not ask to be won. She declared that she would choose — and built a gauntlet that is not a test of swords, but a test of worth. And the only man who survives all four trials learns that the real contest begins in her garden, behind a locked door, where the woman makes her choice with her eyes open. The Realm Golden, Wide, Afraid A land worth taking — and so it will be taken. The Threat Hungrier Than Its Borders An empire patient as a ledger, nearer every day. ✶   The Realm >Arelia is a golden ruin of a country — a vineyard-and-wheat land a single generation past a war that nearly killed it, rich in everything but men and heirs and time. Its capital, Augivine, crowns a hill above the vines, all sun-washed stone and white pennants, the year's great tournament the one season the whole realm lets itself believe it is still worth coveting. Beyond the walls, the riverport of Vienne hums with trade that fills every house with silver and every lord's mouth with talk; the royal forest broods along the border; the market squares brim with grain and rumor. It is a warm, lovely, prosperous little kingdom with one terrible flaw — there is no prince, no heir, no one to inherit the crown but the princess herself, and the patience of a great hungry empire is measured in the deepening shadow it throws across everything it means to swallow. The realm's plenty is its doom and its hope at once: worth taking, and so it will be taken — unless someone strong and honest claims it first, and sees the woman at its heart as more than the last coin in its treasury. ✶   The Weight The nobles are panicking for a marriage to shore up the succession; the king has been quietly signing away pieces of his own kingdom to buy time he no longer has; and the princess is the only one who sees that the realm's real danger is not the army beyond the hills — it is the rot within the crown. The weakness was never the border. It was always the fear that made the crown bargain with it. ✶   The Gauntlet Four trials, four tests, and every one of them is hers. Ride the joust. Survive the melee. Out-think the minds she sets against you. Prove, in the final trial, that you are a man worth trusting with a kingdom and a queen — not a sword worth claiming a prize. The reader charts the course: train, spend, court, and choose how far you will go — and who you will be when the crowd has gone home. ✶   The Players Aurelie — the golden princess. She runs the gauntlet; the prize is the right to be chosen. Mireille — her honest shadow, who has loved without wanting for too long. Isabeau — keeper of the inn, warm as hearth-smoke, and alone too long. Corvin — the empire's envoy. He collects realms with a smile and a signature. Raimbaut — the favored champion, owed this victory by birth — or so he believes. Emeric — the weary king, signing his kingdom away piece by piece from love. Blaise — your squire, who believes you are the proof the world is fair. ✶   Your Road The night before the first trial, you are at the Spotted Stag, your name not yet known and your reasons your own. The crowd has already written the ending — another anonymous knight to be culled in the melee. Aurelie is watching from the Crown's Keep, deciding what four tests will prove a man worthy of her hand. Somewhere in the dark, Corvin pours wine and waits to collect the realm's debt. Your first choice is simple: stay out of sight and hope, or make yourself known — and make the princess start to wonder. ❧   Choose. Ride. And come to the garden.   ❧ ✦ SHE IS NEVER TAKEN. SHE CHOOSES — AND SO DO YOU. ✦

Opening scene

The road has been all coast and salt wind for three days, and your thighs ache with it by the time the walls of Augivine finally rise out of the haze — a sun-washed crown of honey-colored stone on a hill above the vines, white pennants snapping along its towers, the whole city humming even from a league out with the noise of a realm gathering itself for something great. Three days early and the roads are already thick: wagons laden with barrels of the year's vintage, criers shouting down tournament odds, a thin column of rival knights in borrowed colors riding past you toward the gates. You pull your hood lower and let them pass, and the only thing that marks you among them is the young man at your stirrup, gaping like the roof of the world has just come off. "Casteron's behind us, the shrine's behind us, the coast is behind us," Blaise breathes, half to you and half to the sky, tugging the mule along by a rope he refuses to let go of. He has been counting every named land you crossed like a child counting stars, and this — this particular city on its hill — is the one he has been saving the whole ride for. "They said the keep was real, ser. They said the garden was real. I think I believed them about half of it. This is the *whole* of it." He hesitates, then looks up at you, and the wonder in his bright boy's face is the first thing that has made you smile in three days. "You're really going to do it, aren't you? Walk right in there and win her." The tournament grounds are three days off, and yet the city ahead is already more alive than any field will be — the Spotted Stag's sign catches the late sun from its place on the tournament road, the harbor below Vienne shimmering with the ships that came to trade on the promise of the season, and somewhere up in the Crown's Keep, a princess is even now deciding which four trials will prove a man worthy of her hand. You have no banner, no name that carries weight, and every schemer in the city is already placing their bets on the favorites — Raimbaut, the champion who was promised this victory; Corvin, the empire's envoy, watching from the dock like a patient storm. Nobody has wagered on you. Nobody even knows you're coming. The gate swallows you into the cool shade of the lower city, and the noise closes in — merchants hawking, harness bells, the hiss of a farrier's forge. Blaise falls quiet at your side, suddenly aware that this is no longer a story he is riding toward but a place he is inside. He glances at you, then at the great banner of the golden vine hanging over the gatehouse. What do you do first — find the Spotted Stag and claim a room for the days ahead, walk the waterfront to feel the city's pulse and hear who's really favored, or make your way toward the grounds themselves, to see the gauntlet with your own eyes before it claims its first victim?
