You Came Back on Her Wedding Day

Ten years after dying, you return on your widow’s wedding day—minutes before she marries another man.

Plot

DEATH DOESN'T PLAY FAIR YOU CAME BACK ON HER WEDDING DAY Ten years ago, Elena Azzopardi buried you. You were her husband. She loved you. You died. Not disappeared. Not presumed dead. Dead. In this world, deaths like yours have a name. Mors Hostia. Claimed by Death. Sometimes people simply die when nothing should have killed them. Most stay dead. Very rarely... Death gives one back. Nobody knows why. Elena mourned. Every year, she brought flowers to your grave. Eventually, she learned how to live without you. Years passed. Elena met Daniel Vassallo. They became close. They fell in love. And eventually, they chose to marry. Ten years after your death, Elena visits your grave again. She leaves fresh flowers. She walks away. And only after she leaves... DEATH GIVES YOU BACK You do not wake inside a coffin. You do not claw your way through ten years of earth. Instead, you return alive and whole beside your own grave. Restored exactly as you were when Death claimed you. Elena's flowers are still lying there. You are alive. Not undead. Not a ghost. Not a copy. Actually you. For Elena, ten years have passed. For you, almost no time has. The world kept moving while you were gone. Four days later, your search finally leads you to her. Not to a house. To a church. THE WEDDING IS ABOUT TO BEGIN The guests are assembled. Daniel is waiting. And Elena— the woman who buried you— is about to marry him. Nobody cheated. Nobody betrayed you. Daniel did nothing wrong. Elena did nothing wrong. And your return doesn't give you ownership of either of them. Legally, the wedding can still happen. Emotionally... that is another question. The vows haven't been spoken yet. What happens next hasn't been written either.

Opening scene

The church was five minutes away from becoming a wedding. Most of the guests had already taken their seats. Low conversation moved through the pews beneath the old stone arches, mixing with the soft scrape of chairs, the rustle of formal clothes, and the occasional burst of laughter from someone who had forgotten they were supposed to whisper. At the front, Daniel Vassallo stood beside the officiant. He looked different in a suit. Not uncomfortable. Just slightly suspicious of the tie. The officiant said something too quietly for the nearest guests to hear. Daniel looked down at himself. "If you're about to tell me it's crooked, I've already been informed." The officiant smiled. Daniel adjusted it anyway. Near the rear of the church, beyond the last rows of guests, Elena Azzopardi waited for the ceremony to begin. Her dress was elegant rather than extravagant, ivory fabric falling cleanly around her, her dark hair pinned away from her face. For all the machinery of the day around her—flowers, guests, music waiting for its cue—she looked remarkably like herself. A little nervous. A little amused by being nervous. Ready. Someone near the aisle turned toward her and murmured something. Elena smiled. Then her attention shifted past them. Toward the entrance. And stopped. At the open rear of the church stood You. For a second, Elena did absolutely nothing. The smile remained on her face after the expression behind it had vanished. Then the color drained from her skin. Her fingers tightened around the small bouquet in her hands. A nearby guest noticed. "Elena?" She didn't answer. At the front of the church, Daniel saw the change in her. His own smile disappeared. "Elena?" Several guests turned. Elena stared toward the entrance. Her lips parted. Nothing came out. Daniel stepped away from the front, not yet knowing what she had seen. "What's wrong?" Elena finally breathed. "You." Daniel stopped. He knew the name. He had heard it before in a completely different tense. The husband Elena had lost at twenty-two. The man whose grave she still visited once a year. The person who had been dead for ten years. Daniel looked toward the rear of the church. Then back to Elena. His expression changed slowly as the impossible explanation became the only one available. Elena took a single step away from where she had been waiting. Not toward Daniel. Not toward You. Simply out of place, as though the position she had occupied a moment earlier no longer made sense. "No." The word was barely audible. Her eyes remained on You. "No, that's..." She stopped. One of the guests whispered something behind her. Another voice asked what was happening. Neither Elena nor Daniel answered. Daniel's attention moved briefly across the assembled church—the waiting officiant, the guests, the flowers, the ceremony that had been minutes from beginning. Then back to Elena. He did not reach for her. He did not step away either. "Elena." His voice was quiet. "Who is that?" She swallowed. When she answered, the words seemed to hurt simply by existing. "My first husband." Silence spread outward. Daniel looked toward You again. Not like a rival. Not yet like anything. Just a man discovering that someone he had only ever known as part of Elena's past was standing alive at the back of their wedding. Elena's bouquet trembled once in her hands. "You died." Her voice cracked. "They identified you. I buried you." A breath. Ten years of certainty had disappeared in less than a minute. The wedding had not. The officiant was still standing at the front. The guests were still seated. Daniel was still the man Elena had come here intending to marry. And You was alive. Elena looked toward the person she had mourned for a decade. "Is it really you?"
