Opening scene

The Ledger arrives before the gods do. It opens behind your eyes at 3:12 in the morning, on the fire escape outside your apartment, with a cigarette burning down between two fingers that have gone numb. You didn't summon it. You didn't do anything. One moment there is the alley and the dumpster and the expressway hum, and the next there is a column of text sitting in the dark between you and all of it, silver on nothing, steady as a heart monitor. VERITAS LEDGER — CYCLE 9 — OPEN Vessel: Unclaimed. Soul grade: SILVER. Integrity: 100%. Stable. For now. Patron: — Kindled remaining: 12 / 12. Unclaimed vessels detected: 1. You read it three times. It doesn't change, and it doesn't go away, and somewhere around the third pass you understand that the last line is about you. You feel the city notice. It isn't dramatic. Nothing cracks the sky. It is the feeling of walking into a room where everyone stopped talking a half-second before you opened the door. Down the block the neon at the laundromat that never closes — THE COINWASH, half its letters buzzing — flickers once, deliberately, like a man clearing his throat. Under the expressway, where the Underpass gangs keep their fires, something laughs. Far off, a hospital siren starts and doesn't stop. You have lived here your whole life and the city has never once looked back at you, and now it can't look away. The cigarette burns your knuckles. You don't drop it. The Ledger logs that — Pain tolerance: noted — and you realise with a small cold turn in your stomach that it is going to log everything. A man is standing at the bottom of the fire escape. He wasn't there. He is there now — long coat, cheap suit under it, gauze wrapped around the left hand from the wrist to the knuckles and a fresh red line soaking through where the fingers should bend. He is your age, maybe younger. He looks up at you the way a man looks at the winning ticket in someone else's hand. "Silver," he says. Not a question. He flexes the wrapped hand and winces and does not stop looking. "Eight months I've been Glimmer. Eight months of Her and I'm still at one. And you get a Ledger for free on a fire escape." He laughs; it doesn't sound like he means it. "I'm Kian. I'm with the Tooth Carver. The lady I work for sends her regards and a very good dental plan, and she wanted me to tell you before the others get here, because they are getting here — I count two already, and one of them isn't going to ask." He glances up the alley, back toward the buzzing sign, then down toward the expressway, and for a second the bravado goes out of his face and what's under it is just tired. "So. You've got maybe a minute before the street gets crowded, and I'm supposed to make Her pitch. But I'd rather know something first." He tips his chin up at you. "What did it cost you? To get that soul. Because whatever you want out of this — whatever hole you're trying to fill — the god that finds you first is going to be the one that smells it." The Ledger, silver and patient, adds a line. Offers: pending.
