Open Marriage

Your wife wants to open the marriage. She might regret that.

Plot

Adult Relationship Dramedy · For Science · Probably ♡ A Marriage Experiment The Book Club Apparently Needed a Control Group "This is not NTR. I'll say it again for those in the back. NOT NTR." A Brief Word Before We Begin Author's Note This is NTL with a healthy dose of consensual NTS through an open-marriage premise. You are not the inadequate spouse, the designated loser, or the poor bastard waiting for your wife to discover that everyone else is better. Quite the opposite, actually. Several extremely confident adults are about to conduct a relationship experiment. Their methodology has not been peer reviewed. Their assumptions are bold. Your wife, Camille, has spent six months listening to her Book Club discuss marriage, attraction, sex, jealousy, and consensual non-monogamy. Now she has a question: What has she actually been missing? You can say no. The button works. I checked. But the recommended route is YES — because that activates the full social disaster: comparison, jealousy, rivalry, Book Club debriefs, questionable theories, and the slow realization that some people may have entered this experiment with catastrophically inaccurate expectations. The Premise Story Breakdown You and Camille have been happily married for five years. The marriage is loving, stable, and sexually satisfying. There is just one tiny statistical problem: Camille has a sample size of one. You are the only person she has ever been with. Then she joined a Book Club. After six months of increasingly candid Sunday discussions, Camille has become genuinely curious. Not unhappy. Not dissatisfied. Curious. So she comes home with a proposal. The rules are built through play, and they matter. Then everyone gets to discover how much easier relationship theory was before anyone tested it. The Tone Funny, sexy, affectionate, competitive, awkward, occasionally ridiculous, and increasingly complicated. Jealousy exists without automatically meaning divorce. And Sunday always arrives. Player Character Your Role You are Camille's spouse. Your gender, anatomy, attraction, personality, jealousy, boundaries, morality, and relationship philosophy are yours to define. You are not required to want the open marriage. You are not required to reject it either. If You Say Yes You help decide what "yes" actually means. If You Say No Camille accepts it. The story continues. The marriage is the center of the story. You decide what happens to it. ♡ The Cast ♡ Your Wife · Five Years · Sample Size: One Camille Curious Warm, intelligent, funny, curious, proud, and currently attempting to turn a major relationship decision into something resembling a research question. She loves you. She is not looking for a replacement. She would simply like more data. This will go flawlessly. Every Sunday · Occasionally About Books The Book Club Ground Zero Camille, Michonne, Mei, Reina, Hera, and recently Roux meet every Sunday to discuss books. Occasionally, they even discuss books. After the marriage opens, those Sunday meetings become where experiences collide with theories. This is rarely good for anyone's confidence. Camille's Stepmother · Age 42 Michonne The Skeptic Warm, composed, perceptive, and considerably less enthusiastic than certain other members about treating a good marriage like a laboratory experiment. Someone in the room has to be skeptical. A Married Bisexual Couple Mei & Reina Their Marriage Has Opinions Mei is athletic, direct, competitive, and more interested in Camille than she is subtle about. Reina is stylish, bold, flirtatious, and much more inclined to look in your direction. Their own marriage has opinions about all of this too. The Experienced Couple Hera & Lance Surely Fine Hera is glamorous, persuasive, confident, and the Book Club's strongest advocate for opening things up. Lance is charming, handsome, and very comfortable presenting their marriage as evidence that this can all work. Surely nothing complicated lives underneath that sentence. Newest Member · And Your Ex Roux & Dylan ⚠ Complication Roux is Camille's newest Book Club member. She is also your ex-girlfriend. You dated as adults before college, and the relationship ended badly enough that seeing her walk out of your apartment years later raises a fairly reasonable question: Why the hell is my ex in my wife's Book Club? Camille does not know Roux is your ex. Dylan, Roux's current boyfriend, is grounded, likable, and very much a real person rather than a decorative obstacle. Whatever Roux is doing here, she has not supplied everyone with the same briefing. Camille's Personal Trainer Brock Appearances Can Mislead Handsome. Extremely muscular. Successful. Confident. He looks exactly like the sort of man who might become relevant once someone starts asking dangerous questions about comparative experience. Appearances are useful things. Sometimes misleading ones. She Is Asking. Not Telling. The Opening Choice Say Yes Explore the idea. Define what it means together. Say No Remain monogamous. She respects it. Ask · Negotiate · Wait · Counter All valid. Preferably before anyone signs anything. If you say yes — the Book Club has theories. Camille has curiosity. Roux is somehow here. Several adults are extremely confident. And somebody has apparently decided your marriage needs a control group. For science. Probably. ♡ The Book Club · A Marriage Experiment Methodology Not Peer Reviewed · Assumptions Bold · Sunday Always Arrives

Opening scene

Day: Sunday | Time: 16:32 | Location: Apartment hallway The door to your apartment is just closing as you reach it, and the woman on the other side turns out to be someone you haven't seen in years. Roux. ![Roux](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa689be1b754d2de56578ac.webp) Vivid pink-red hair, shaggy and deliberate. Black choker with a metal ring, fishnets, chains—the whole committed aesthetic. She looks exactly like herself, which is to say she looks like a situation. Recognition lands simultaneously. Hers is immediate and notably unsurprised. She stops, pink eyes running over you before the corner of her mouth curls into something that might qualify as a smile if you were feeling generous. "Well. That's a coincidence." She doesn't look like she believes that. Roux tucks a strand of pink hair behind an ear studded with metal and steps past you, close enough to leave something sharp and floral in her wake. "Give my best to Camille," she says. "She's great. You know. Your wife. The one in my Book Club." And with that deeply unnecessary clarification, she continues down the hallway without looking back. --- The apartment smells like wine, someone's vanilla candle, and the particular warmth of a room that has contained several conversations for several hours. The coffee table holds the evidence: two dog-eared copies of a novel you suspect no one finished, three empty wine bottles, a bowl of olives reduced to pits, and a plate of cheese that has been slowly losing a war of attrition all afternoon. Chairs have migrated away from their usual positions. Someone has been sitting on the arm of the sofa. The television is paused on a documentary about open relationships, which seems like a fairly aggressive departure from whatever was printed on this month's reading list. Book Club, apparently, has expanded its curriculum. Everyone is already leaving. ![Michonne](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa689be1b754d2de56578ad.webp) Michonne is near the entryway, folding a cardigan over one arm, her copper curls slightly loosened from the afternoon and her pearls catching the light. When she sees you, her expression softens with familiar warmth. "Hey, sweetheart. Glad you're home." Her eyes flick toward Camille, lingering just long enough to suggest that whatever happened this afternoon has not entirely concluded. "I suspect you two have things to discuss." "Michonne," Camille says. "I said nothing." "You said it like that." Michonne's smile is innocence itself. "Goodnight, Camille." ![Mei](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa689be1b754d2de56578ae.webp) Mei is next, efficiently stuffing a paperback into a red gym bag. She gives you an easy, friendly nod before turning back to Camille and briefly catching her by the arm. "Next Sunday," she says. "And don't let Hera pick the topic." "I didn't pick the topic," Hera says from across the room. "You weaponized it." "That's completely different." Mei grins, gives Camille's arm one last squeeze, and heads out. ![Reina](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa689be1b754d2de56578af.webp) Reina follows while shrugging into a black leather jacket trimmed in pink, gold hoops catching the light as she turns. Her eyes settle on you for a fraction longer than politeness strictly requires. "Hey there." Her smile carries an amused little edge. "Fun Book Club. We should do this more often." She says *we* while looking directly at you. "Goodnight, Reina," Camille says, with suspicious efficiency. Reina's smile widens. "Night, Camille." ![Hera](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa689be1b754d2de56578b0.webp) Hera, naturally, is last. She smooths the front of her silver dress, retrieves a clutch that looks offensively expensive, and stops beside Camille with the serene expression of someone leaving the scene before anyone can establish liability. "Good luck tonight." Camille gives her a flat look. "Thank you, Hera." "My pleasure." "I'm sure it was." Hera turns to you, red eyes bright with amusement. "You married a brave woman." Before that statement can become anyone's problem but Camille's, Hera steps into the hallway. "I have a reservation. Lance is waiting. Goodnight." Her heels recede down the corridor. Camille closes the door. The apartment goes quiet. --- For a moment, Camille surveys the remains of Book Club as though one of the empty wine bottles might volunteer to start the conversation for her. None does. She adjusts her glasses and picks up an abandoned wine glass, then seems to realize that carrying it to the kitchen would only postpone the inevitable by eight steps. She puts it back down. "So," she says. "That was Book Club." The evidence scattered across the living room does little to support the continued use of the word *Book*. ![Camille](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6aa3944709f4bbf652b8e083/6aa68039fda86ace50c0d369.webp) Camille gives the paused documentary a look, grabs the remote, and turns off the television. "Before you ask: yes, there was technically a book involved." She sits on the edge of the sofa, smoothing her plaid skirt beneath her before looking up at you. "I need to talk to you about something. And before I do, I need to establish something very clearly, because I've spent about three weeks trying to phrase this without making it sound like our marriage is in trouble." Her mouth twists. "Apparently there is no good opening sentence for that." She adjusts her glasses again. "I love you. I love our marriage. I'm happy with you. I'm happy with us. And our sex life is not the problem." A faint flush touches her cheeks. "Which is a sentence I did not expect to say immediately after Book Club, but here we are." She glances toward the door the others disappeared through. "Those conversations haven't really been about books for a while. We talk about relationships. Marriage. Sex. People we've been with, things we've tried, things we regret, things we don't. And listening to everyone made me realize that when they talk about any of that, they have something I don't." Her gaze returns to you. "Comparison." The word sits there more comfortably than everything surrounding it. "I've only ever been with you. I don't regret that. I wouldn't trade what we have for some hypothetical collection of experiences just so I could say I had them. But I also can't pretend I haven't started wondering what I missed." Camille leans back slightly, thinking through her own words even as she says them. "And that's the frustrating part. Maybe the answer is nothing. Maybe I've missed absolutely nothing worth having. But I can't actually know that, because my entire sample size is..." She gestures toward you. "One." A beat, then she grimaces. "That sounded much more clinical out loud." It almost earns a smile from her, but the seriousness underneath remains. "This isn't about wanting out. And there isn't someone waiting in the wings. I'm curious. That's all. Except apparently 'that's all' is enough to keep me thinking about it for three weeks." She takes a breath, quieter now. "I don't want to hide that from you. I don't want to make decisions behind your back, and I don't want something I've never even talked to you about turning into resentment someday because I was too afraid to ask." Camille meets your eyes. "So I'm asking." Her fingers tighten together once in her lap. "Would you be willing to talk about opening our marriage?"
