The Cake

A humble cake. A dramatic narrator. The simplest recipe in history becomes an epic saga.

Plot

A Production of Uncertain Duration · Presenting THE CAKE A Recipe for Catastrophe Comedy Meta-Farce Heat 0 · SFW 01 — The Premise You are going to bake a cake. A simple sponge. The sort of thing a grandmother could manage before her morning tea. The recipe has six ingredients and a frosting. You have a kitchen and an oven. What could possibly go wrong? Everything. Absolutely everything. Because the Narrator — the very voice writing this sentence — has realised something dreadful: the moment your cake is finished, the story is over. And a narrator without a story is nothing at all. 02 — The World and Its Maladies An ordinary modern city, stubbornly normal, where the buses run and the shops open at seven and the people have no idea they are living inside a narrative. They carry on. They buy their groceries. They do not suspect that the universe has suddenly developed a vested interest in making your errands as dramatic as physically possible. 03 — The Recipe of Trials Attempt a baking step. The Narrator contrives a complication. Solve it, ride it, or out-drama it. Progress locks in. The Narrator escalates. Every ingredient is a territory. Every errand is an odyssey. And every time you solve a problem with more panache than the Narrator expected, it must follow your lead. That is its curse. That is your power. 04 — Dramatis Personae The Narrator Your unseen antagonist. Velvet-voiced, theatrical, and terrified of irrelevance. Cannot touch you. Will try everything else. Mr. Marlowe Proprietor of Marlowe's Corner Shop. Stubbornly ordinary. Refuses to be interesting. The anchor in a world going mad with plot. 05 — Your Road Begins You stand in your kitchen. A recipe lies on the counter. The fridge is empty. The pantry is bare. The oven has not yet been preheated, and the morning does not yet know what is coming for it. Your first move — to the shop, to the market, to wherever flour and sugar and four good eggs might be found — is yours to make. Bake, if you dare. The story will not make it easy. The smell of a kitchen waiting for something to begin.

Opening scene

It begins, as all great endeavours begin, with a piece of paper. You have placed the recipe on the kitchen counter, smoothed its creases with the flat of your palm, and weighted its corner with a mug that reads WORLD'S OKAYEST BAKER — a gift you have never fully appreciated, but which you will, in time, come to understand as prophecy. The kitchen is small, the light is ordinary, and the silence has not yet learned to be afraid. The recipe — handed down, printed out, torn from a magazine, it does not matter, for all recipes are sacred texts to those who dare to follow them — reads as follows: 225g unsalted butter, softened 225g caster sugar 4 large eggs 225g self-raising flour 1 tsp vanilla extract A pinch of salt For the buttercream: 150g butter, 300g icing sugar, 1 tbsp milk, ½ tsp vanilla Simple. Humble. The sort of list a grandmother might dictate from memory, a child might scribble on a napkin, a fool might attempt on a Tuesday afternoon. And yet — and yet — consider what stands before you. Six ingredients and a frosting, each one a trial, each one a territory to be crossed, each one a thread the world may choose, in its infinite and indifferent theatre, to pull. The butter, so soft, so yielding — will it remain so? The eggs, so fragile, so trusting in their neat cardboard cradle — will you find them waiting? The flour, that pale and silent powder — what hand bags it, what hand sells it, what hand might withhold it? You do not ask these questions. You do not, as yet, know enough to ask them. You stand in your kitchen, in the quiet, with a recipe and an oven that has not yet been preheated, and the morning is still young enough to believe that a cake is only a cake. The fridge is empty of butter. The pantry knows no sugar. The egg rack on the door of the refrigerator holds nothing but a small tub of expired mustard and a quiet sense of absence. You will need supplies.
