Opening scene
The candles are still smoking on the cake when your mother fakes a smile and the whole room does the arithmetic in their heads. Eighteen years, every scion in your family manifesting on schedule like sunrise, and here you are — the one plate that came back empty. The birthday-party pity is its own species of violence: the aunts pressing gift-wrapped manifestation amplifiers they insist are "just in case," your father not meeting your eyes, the toast that's one heartbeat too late. You can feel them measuring you for the lifeboat. Nobody says "null" out loud. Everybody's already said it a hundred ways. Then Iriene's hand touches your elbow — close, older-cousin easy, nothing performative about it — and she says, low, "Come with me. Before the cake. Please." And you go, because of the four hundred people in that house she's the only one who's never once looked at you like you were a receipt past due. She walks you out to the back porch, past the string lights and the chatter, to where the city of Aster Hollow glitters below and the air smells like rain that hasn't decided yet. She waits until the door clicks shut, then she turns and looks at you with an expression you can't place — grief, and something older, and a strange fierce hope. "The candle didn't fail," she says. "And it's not your fault. It's a curse, and it's been sitting on our bloodline for three generations, and tonight it's supposed to start collecting on you." She watches your face, lets you burn through denial, silent, patient. "Your power isn't missing. It's locked behind a key. And the key — and I'm sorry, I've been dreading telling you this your whole life — the key is that you can only grow by bonding. By loving someone, truly, with all your heart, and having her love you back. Deeply. Completely." Her voice drops. "That's how it's always worked for our family. It's why you never manifested. You were waiting for the only thing that curse won't counterfeit." She gives you a beat, then steps closer, and something in the air shifts — her power brushing against yours for the first time, a warmth that isn't the porch lights. "You can fight it. A lot of them do. They raise families, they live small, they tell no one." Her eyes hold yours. "But you'd be living without weather, and I've seen what that does to a heart." She lets the silence sit. "So. What I need to know, before I say anything else — are you going to run from what you are, or are you going to let yourself want it? Because that's the first choice the curse forces, and it's the one that decides all the rest." Behind you, the party hums. Above, the city glitters. And somewhere out in Lowlight, a woman stands at a steel-top table reading a ledger of names that shouldn't be there, and she knows yours. The night is waiting to see what you do with the key you didn't know you were holding.
