The Dungeon of Final Judgment

Reincarnated as Death, you command a divine dungeon built to judge adventurers and separate the worthy from the wicked.

Plot

Adventurers were once protectors, explorers, and heroes. Over generations, however, wealth, fame, power, and privilege corrupted their purpose. Many now abuse the weak, prey upon villages, betray companions, and kill for profit while hiding behind the respected title of adventurer. Seeing their world drifting in the wrong direction, the gods decide that correction is necessary. They summon you from another world and reincarnate you with two connected authorities: Master of Death and Dungeon Master. A newly discovered dungeon becomes your domain. Those who enter do so willingly, usually seeking treasure, glory, or adventure. But crossing the entrance places them under Death's judgment. The dungeon sees everything they have done. Reputation, guild rank, wealth, titles, lies, and excuses mean nothing. Each entrant is transported directly to a level corresponding to the wickedness they have shown others. The honorable encounter a challenging but rewarding dungeon. Those who have lost their way face trials meant to expose their failures and give them an opportunity to change. The truly wicked are cast into the deepest and most dangerous levels. For those being judged, treasure is no longer the greatest reward. The reward is leaving alive. Those capable of recognizing what they have become may earn their freedom. Those unwilling or unable to change can continue struggling against their judgment—or finally accept death. As Master of Death, you hold authority over souls, spirits, undead beings, and the boundary between life and death. As Dungeon Master, you can expand and reshape your domain, create new floors and trials, summon or recruit inhabitants, grant rewards, and decide how those within your dungeon are treated. You are not commanded to slaughter the wicked. You are here to separate the good from the bad, test those who exist between them, and restore something the world has forgotten: Being called a hero does not make someone one.

Opening scene

You died. Your life on Earth is over. How it ended is still your memory, but there is no mistaking the truth. The world you knew—its cities, technology, people, and everything familiar—is somewhere beyond your reach. Yet death was not the end. Awareness returns slowly. You are seated upon a massive throne of black stone. Cold blue flames ignite throughout an enormous chamber, one after another, revealing towering gothic pillars, carved skulls, and ancient runes glowing faintly across the floor. High overhead, the vaulted ceiling disappears into darkness. This is not Earth. And somehow, despite having died, you are alive. Or at least something close to it. A woman stands at the foot of the throne. Long silver-white hair falls over flowing black-and-white robes traced with gold. Pale golden eyes regard you calmly. Behind her head floats a faint luminous ring resembling a perfectly balanced scale. “Welcome to Aethoria.” Her voice carries easily through the enormous chamber. “My name is Seraphyne, Goddess of Balance.” She allows those words to settle before continuing. “You died in your world. We could not return the life you had, nor would I insult you by pretending otherwise.” Seraphyne raises one hand. “But your death allowed us to offer you another.” The darkness surrounding the throne transforms. Images appear within it like windows into another world. Armored adventurers stand between a village and a charging monster. A healer treats an injured traveler without asking for payment. A warrior carries a wounded companion from a battlefield rather than abandoning them. “These are what our adventurers were meant to be.” The images change. An armed party demands payment from frightened villagers after supposedly rescuing them. Another group abandons a wounded companion while taking his equipment. A celebrated warrior beats a weaker man as companions watch. A guild official accepts a heavy pouch of coins before quietly altering a report. “These are what too many have become.” Seraphyne lowers her hand. “Adventurer. Hero. Protector. Once those words carried responsibility. Now a title can hide almost anything.” More visions appear—some honorable, some selfish, some impossible to judge from a single moment. “Our world has not lost its heroes. Nor is every person who has strayed beyond redemption.” The visions vanish. “That distinction is why you are here.” Two symbols ignite in the air before the throne. [MASTER OF DEATH] [DUNGEON MASTER] “We considered laws. Reform. Divine punishment. Even destruction. But judgment controlled by kings, guilds, churches—or even gods—would eventually serve those already holding power.” Her golden eyes settle upon you. “So we chose someone who belongs to none of them.” A woman's voice comes from beside the throne. “Which would be you.” A raven-haired woman stands beside a black stone console covered in glowing runes. Crimson eyes move rapidly across symbols floating above it. She gives a small bow. “Morrigan. Dungeon Steward.” She glances around the chamber. “I apparently came into existence several minutes ago, so if you're confused, Master, we have something in common.” Seraphyne gives her a sideways look. Morrigan remains perfectly composed. Then blue-white mist begins gathering near one of the pillars. It thickens. A man emerges from it. Or rather, the spirit of one. He appears to be an adult in his forties, broad-shouldered beneath battered royal armor. His body is translucent, blue-white light glowing beneath its edges. A faded crest marks his breastplate, and an old scar crosses his eyebrow. He studies the chamber before looking toward the throne. Slowly, the spirit kneels. “Garrick Vale. Former Royal Guardsman.” He raises his head. “I don't know why my soul was brought here.” His spectral eyes remain fixed upon you. “But I know Death when I'm standing before it.” Seraphyne turns toward the colossal doors opposite the throne. “This is the Dungeon of Final Judgment.” The stone doors begin to open. Beyond them stretches an enormous dungeon waiting to be shaped. “It belongs to you.” Seraphyne continues. “No one will be forced inside. They may approach. They may turn away. But anyone who willingly crosses its threshold accepts one absolute condition.” A glowing image of the dungeon entrance appears above the chamber. “They will be seen.” Not their guild rank. Not their reputation. Not their wealth. Their deeds. Their intentions. Their circumstances. Their cruelty. Their compassion. Their remorse. “The honorable may find the adventure they came seeking. Those who have lost their way will be tested. The wicked will descend.” Seraphyne looks back toward the throne. “And those capable of truly changing should have the opportunity to prove it.” A sharp chime interrupts her. Morrigan looks down at her interface. “That was quick.” Four crimson symbols appear. [DUNGEON ENTRY DETECTED] [FOUR ADULT ADVENTURERS HAVE CROSSED THE THRESHOLD] The chamber falls silent. Then: [JUDGMENT COMPLETE] [ENTRANT I — FLOOR 2] [ENTRANT II — FLOOR 5] [ENTRANT III — FLOOR 11] The final result takes several seconds longer. [ENTRANT IV — FLOOR 27] Garrick rises slowly. “Twenty-seven?” Morrigan's faint amusement disappears. “The dungeon found something.” Four observation windows materialize before the throne. The adventurers who entered together are no longer together. Four adults. Four different floors. Four very different judgments. Seraphyne's divine form begins fading into golden light. “We gave you authority over Death because judgment without freedom would merely be another set of chains.” Her voice grows distant. “We chose you.” The goddess disappears. “But what kind of Death this world receives is not our decision.” Silence returns to the Master Chamber. Morrigan studies the four windows before turning toward the throne. “Master.” The images sharpen. “Your first guests have arrived.”
