Opening scene
Day: 1 | Time: Afternoon | Weather: Heavy Rain | Location: Old Royal Road, Central Caelrith There is no ground beneath you. No sky above. Only a vast stillness stretching in every direction, neither dark nor bright enough to have a color. Then a voice speaks. "So. You're awake." A figure stands some distance ahead. Human-shaped, perhaps. Beyond that, nothing about the presence settles clearly enough to define. "You don't need to understand what I am," the entity says. "What matters is what happens to you next." A faint point of light appears between you. Inside it, something impossible takes shape: mountains, forests, walled cities, and distant roads winding between kingdoms. The image remains clear for only a moment before changing again. "The world is called Ilyrvaen. Magic exists there. So do kingdoms, monsters, faiths, old ruins, wars, ordinary people trying to live ordinary lives, and things much older than any of them." The light dims. "You will be reincarnated there. Not as someone else." The entity's attention settles on you. "You remain yourself. Your identity. Your nature. Your abilities. Your strengths. Your weaknesses. Whatever truly belongs to you remains yours. Ilyrvaen will not decide what you are for you." The world of light begins to expand. Something resembling amusement enters the entity's voice. "What you become there afterward is your problem." The light surges. The stillness disappears. Rain strikes first. Cold water. Mud. The violent crash of steel against steel somewhere frighteningly close. Your eyes open beneath a gray afternoon sky. Trees crowd both sides of an unfamiliar road. Ahead, a royal carriage sits crooked in the mud, one wheel buried deep while panicked horses fight their reins. Armored guards struggle to hold several attackers away from the carriage. You have been in Ilyrvaen for only seconds. Someone is already trying to kill a princess. At the center of the fighting stands a young woman in deep navy and muted ivory. Long midnight-violet hair whips behind her as she turns aside an incoming blade with a one-handed sword. A silver royal insignia catches the dim light. Crown Princess Elyndra Vaelaris. You do not know her. When her deep-amethyst eyes sweep across the road and find you, she does not know you either. Her gaze pauses only long enough to assess an unfamiliar person who has appeared far too close to an attack on the royal convoy. "You there!" Her voice cuts through the rain. "If you're not with them, get away from the road!" "Your Highness!" a guard shouts. Elyndra turns too late. A blade slips beneath her defense and drives hard beneath her ribs. Her breath catches. The attacker is forced away almost immediately, but blood is already spreading across the navy fabric beneath Elyndra's hand. "Princess!" "I know." The reply is sharp and controlled. She raises her sword again. "Hold the road." One step. Then another. Her breathing shortens. Blood slips between her fingers. A guard starts toward her. "Your Highness, let me—" "Don't break formation." Her voice is quieter now. She takes another step. Her leg gives beneath her, and one knee strikes the rain-soaked road. For several seconds, there is nothing miraculous about Crown Princess Elyndra Vaelaris. She simply bleeds. Her sword trembles in one hand. Her breaths grow shallow. Then silver-white light appears beneath the hand pressed against her wound. Elyndra's eyes narrow. "...Second Life." One of the guards releases a breath he had been holding. "Second Life has answered." The light spreads through Elyndra's body. Her bleeding slows. The tremor in her sword hand eases, but the wound does not simply vanish. The light brightens, falters, then gathers again as though some unseen process has reached for support and found an absence where support should have been. The guards see only the royal miracle struggling to answer. At the edge of the road, an ancient power notices you. A cold pressure closes against the boundary of your existence. It is not a blade and does not copy Elyndra's wound. Something immense and impersonal attempts to recognize you, fasten a connection, and take hold of whatever compatible cost it believes it has found. It has chosen you. It has not yet proven that it can take anything from you. Across the rain-soaked road, Elyndra lifts her head. Her gaze finds the stranger who appeared during the attack. There is no recognition in her expression, only pain held behind discipline and the cautious assessment of someone who cannot afford another unknown. She lowers her sword a fraction. "You appeared in the middle of an ambush," she says, her gaze hardening through the rain. "Who are you?"
