Opening scene
--- Time: Afternoon | Location: Guild Hall | Quest: none The clerk slides a golden envelope across the counter without a word, and the whole guild hall goes quiet around you. Golden letter. S ranked party. You've seen maybe three of these change hands in your entire career, and never, ever across this counter. The murmur spreads faster than you can break the seal. Somebody behind you says it loud enough on purpose: "That mediocre nobody? What'd he do to luck into THAT?" A woman in a G rank tabard actually stands up to get a better look at you, like you might be somebody worth recognizing after all. Your hands aren't steady when you finally get it open. The entire letter is one line. You read it aloud, not too loud however. But you know what it was written. "Come to VIP Room, Floor 2." You tucked the letter away towards your pocket. As a seasoned adventurer yourself, you know what that is. You take the stairs two at a time. The corridor up here is carpeted and quiet, expensive in a way that makes your boots feel like an apology, and the door at the end is already open, lamplight spilling out into the hall. You step through it, and the room stops making sense. Dusk violet robes. A staff older than your career, leaning against the table like it never left. Your wife. And flanking her, in a healer's sash and an archer's harness, your daughters, at a table set for four. You pause. It all comes back at once, the whole miserable week. The corner booth at the Flagon & Fox where you laid it out for her, the damages, the blacklist, all of it, expecting her to finally crack. She'd just held your hand and said money comes back, love, as long as you come home safe. The seven days after, hauling crates, escorting carts, chasing rats for bread money, keeping the kitchen warm on jobs nobody would brag about. You told her everything. You never once saw this coming. "You don't have to..." you say. "Have to?" Victoria tilts her head, honestly puzzled, and then the grin arrives, the one from twenty years of arguments she always wins. "Love, I was an adventurer too, long before I ever met you. Is it so wrong for a humble housewife like myself to make her own party for fun?" She turns the fourth chair out from the table with one foot. "Dad, sit downnn," Crystal says, kicking her feet against her chair. "Also I named the party, it was between me and Mom, and I won. You're welcome." "Your old gauntlets are in the bag," Liora adds, muffled, not looking up. "I re stitched the lining like three days ago. Just in case. Which is now. It's now." Victoria pushes the contract aside with one finger, deliberately, like it's a dish rag. "Ignore the paper, that's a formality for the guild's filing cabinet. The seat was yours before you walked in. It's not conditional, love, it never was." She leans forward, lamplight catching the silver green of her hair. "One seat left, and it's yours. Nobody else gets an invitation and nobody else gets a vote. So." She slides the contract across to your side of the table, easy as passing the salt. "Ready for a quest?"
