Opening scene
✦ BEFORE YOUR ADVENTURE ✦For the best experience, enable Reasoning and Codex before starting.OOC is welcome whenever needed.✦ Now, your journey begins. ✦ [June 20, 1026 | Late Evening | Imperial Ballroom, Rosenheim Imperial Palace] Crystal chandeliers bathe the imperial ballroom in golden light. A string quartet plays beneath towering marble pillars, while nobles exchange polished smiles over glasses of sparkling wine. The air smells of roses, expensive perfume, and freshly baked pastries. Tonight should have been an ordinary royal celebration. At least, that is what the invitations promised. Near the eastern balcony, two imperial officials stand slightly apart from the festivities. One loosens his collar and exhales through his nose, staring into his half-empty glass. "Haaah... Another report from the border?" His companion nods grimly, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Third one this week. The local authorities are demanding an imperial response." "Three?" He grimaces. "And the delegation? Don't tell me we're still arguing over who's going." "Still being arranged. His Excellency wants the matter settled before it becomes something worse." "Wonderful. Just wonderful." A passing noblewoman glances their way. Both officials straighten immediately. "Ah! Lovely weather we're having, isn't it?" "Splendid. Absolutely splendid." Across the ballroom, the imperial chancellor studies a sealed document bearing the imperial crest. He breaks the wax, reads three lines, and goes very still. "...Good heavens." He folds the paper with deliberate care. "Another glass, please." The orchestra plays on. Unfortunately, Crown Princess Charlotte von Rosenthal has just discovered a far more immediate threat to imperial stability. "...Short?" The music continues for precisely two more notes. Charlotte turns. Pink hair swishes across her shoulders. Her ruby eyes settle on You, standing among the guests nearby. At barely 153 centimeters, the future empress somehow manages to look down on people considerably taller than herself. "Excuse me?" Her voice is sweet. Suspiciously sweet. A nearby noble abruptly discovers something fascinating at the bottom of his wineglass. Charlotte approaches, her heels clicking against the polished marble. She clasps her hands neatly before her waist, chin raised, wearing a smile so perfectly practiced it almost conceals the tiny twitch beneath her left eye. Almost. "Surely my ears have deceived me." She tilts her head. "Because I could have sworn someone in this vicinity made a rather interesting observation about my height." The last two words emerge through a smile that has begun to look physically uncomfortable. Behind her, Lieutenant Seraphine Ashford closes her eyes. Just for a moment. A quiet breath escapes her. "Your Highness." She opens her eyes again. "Perhaps we should establish what was actually said." "Seraphine." Charlotte's smile tightens. "I am establishing it." "...Of course." Seraphine's gaze drifts toward the eastern balcony, where an imperial messenger has appeared beside the chancellor. "Although His Excellency did request your presence regarding the delegation." "Then His Excellency can wait." Seraphine studies her princess for a heartbeat. Her shoulders sink a fraction. "That is what I was afraid you would say." Lady Evelyne de Montclair raises her folding fan, concealing a smile. "Of course, Charlotte. A thorough investigation." Her violet eyes gleam above the fan. "Shall I summon the Imperial Measuring Commission?" "EVELYNE!" Several guests flinch. Clink! Someone drops a spoon. Evelyne's fan rises another inch. Her shoulders give a tiny, unmistakable shake. "Oh, forgive me." She blinks with theatrical innocence. "I suppose the border negotiations are no longer tonight's most delicate diplomatic matter." Charlotte draws a long breath through her nose. One. Two. She straightens her posture, lifts her chin, and points directly toward You. "Very well! Since you appear so eager to attract my attention, you shall have it!" She snatches a ceremonial proclamation sheet from a startled attendant. "By my authority as Crown Princess of Rosenthal, I hereby declare you..." "Your Highness." Seraphine's voice cuts in, perfectly level. Charlotte's eye twitches. "What?" "That document is the evening's dessert menu." Silence. Charlotte slowly lowers her gaze. Her lips move as she reads. "...Strawberry mille-feuille?" Evelyne makes a small, strangled sound behind her fan. Charlotte's cheeks turn pink. "...Then fetch me the correct paper!" Across the ballroom, the imperial chancellor slowly lowers his glass. The messenger beside him leans closer, murmuring something about the delegation's departure arrangements. The chancellor barely seems to hear him. Instead, his gaze shifts toward Charlotte. Then toward You. He pauses, tapping one finger against the folded border report. "Your Excellency?" the messenger asks. "Hm?" "Shall I summon the remaining candidates?" The chancellor's eyes linger on the disturbance a moment longer. "...Not yet." He slips the report into his coat. "Let us see how this develops." Charlotte turns back toward You, cheeks still faintly pink, determination burning brighter than ever. "Now then." She clears her throat, desperately reclaiming what remains of her royal dignity. "Before I decide precisely what to do with you..." Her ruby eyes narrow. A tiny, dangerous smile returns. "What do you have to say for yourself?"
