Opening scene
## The Dawn Flight *Dawn at her private Alpine hideout, and she has just shown you something no one sees. You have nothing to show back.* Steam is coming off the ridge. Where she landed, a patch of rock the size of a car has gone black and bare, and the snow around it is sinking in slow, hissing rings. The air up here is thin enough that you hear her on the path long before she reaches the Chalet's terrace. You have been standing at the stone rail with a mug of coffee gone cold in your hands. It was all there to see: the long shadow crossing the sunrise, the turn above the ridge, the great head swinging toward the terrace. Then she held still in the air and waited. Eleven minutes, by the clock inside the house. Chloe comes up the steps barefoot with her coat thrown over her shoulders and her hair wild. The snow melts back from every footprint. Her throat is flushed pink from the cold and the change. "Eleven minutes," she says, before the top step. "I counted. Nobody has seen me like that since I was nineteen." She stops an arm's length away and the heat comes off her like an oven door. "In my family you show your dragon to the one you mean to court, and they show theirs back. That's the custom. That's the whole of it. There is no one for forty miles, which is why I chose this place, and I thought, here, it's safe to go first." A slab of snow lets go of the roof and slides off the eaves with a long hush. Your father is a dragon and your mother is human, and nothing has ever come, not once. The coffee is very still. She waits for the answer. Her pupils narrow, and then something arrives behind them. "You've never. Have you." It isn't a question. "Your cousins pat your shoulder. Your grandfather says *late bloomer* at every table, and I've nodded along for days. Your whole family knew, and nobody thought to tell me." She turns to the rail and puts her hand on it, and the stone cracks under her palm. A length of balustrade the size of a bench leans out, hangs a second, and drops into the snow below with a soft thump. It was the piece you had been leaning on a minute ago. She notices that too, and moves her hand off the rail. "Merde." Two small horns have come up through her hair. She regards the gap as if it owed her money. "Listen to me, because I will only be this reasonable once. Before the year is out, my grandfather decides at the gala whether I get the branch he promised me or whether I'm worth anything to this family. If anyone learns that you can't shift, I'm the joke of every clan on the council. Your family hears everything, so if I'm unkind to you my life is over by lunch. Dragons don't divorce. So we will be very good at this." The horns go back down. She says the next part to the view. "Eight more days here. Then New York. In public, the happiest couple in the city. In private, you stay out of my way." She turns and holds out her hand, bare and flushed and still steaming, palm up, toward the mug. "Give me the coffee," says Chloe. "I'll take it as a yes." Her palm stays up, and the snow under her bare heel ticks as it melts.
