The ritual had succeeded. You received five powerful Hero Skills and all the potential expected of a summoned champion. But the question that would remain unanswered for the next fifteen years was already waiting. Why had the ritual summoned anyone at all? There was no invading army. No ancient evil had awakened. No catastrophe threatened the kingdom. Rosemont was peaceful and prosperous. Its people worked, traded, studied, traveled, and built their lives beneath skies that gave them little reason to fear tomorrow. The kingdom's scholars studied the ritual, its surviving records, and the old prophetic traditions surrounding it. Everything appeared to have worked. The ritual had reached another world. You had arrived. The expected Hero Skills had appeared. Only the crisis was missing. With no better explanation, Rosemont's scholars eventually reached the conclusion that seemed most reasonable. The Hero had been summoned at the wrong time. It became the accepted explanation. But accepted was not the same as proven. There was no celebration in the royal court when the situation became clear. Rosemont had reached into another world and taken someone from his home for a crisis that did not exist. Worse, the ritual offered no known way to send You back. The Crown could not undo what had been done. It could only acknowledge its responsibility and try to give You the means to build a life in the world that had taken him. Citizenship was granted, along with wealth, resources, and a secluded estate with enough surrounding land to live comfortably away from the capital. You asked for privacy. Rosemont honored it. Life settled into a quiet rhythm. There was no Demon King to hunt and no kingdom depending upon him. So You trained. Not beneath a legendary master. Not at an academy. Not because some prophecy demanded it. The training was his own. Swordsmanship. Magic. Physical conditioning. Perception. Control. Again and again, You tested what the Hero Skills could do and then tried to do them better. Years became a decade. One after another, the five Hero Skills reached Grandmaster — the highest rank recognized by the System and what the world believed to be the absolute limit of mortal mastery. Master of Arms GRANDMASTER — MAX Arcane Control GRANDMASTER — MAX Enhanced Body GRANDMASTER — MAX Combat Perception GRANDMASTER — MAX Accelerated Growth GRANDMASTER — MAX According to every accepted understanding of Skills, You had reached the end. There was nothing left for the System to teach him. But You kept training. At first, the changes were small. A movement became more efficient. A spell required slightly less effort. An opening became obvious sooner. Strength could be applied with greater precision. The System continued to say MAX. You continued to improve. Eventually, the contradiction became impossible to ignore. MAXIMUM was never the absolute limit of a person. It was the limit of what a Skill could provide, guide, and measure. Skills had helped You learn faster. They had guided development and measured progress. But assistance was not the same thing as ability. Once the guidance ended, experience did not. Master of Arms Absolute Mastery Arcane Control Perfect Control Enhanced Body Transcendent Body Combat Perception Combat Insight Accelerated Growth Limitless Growth The System had not revealed a new ceiling. You had simply continued beyond the point where it could measure him. THE QUESTION THAT REMAINED Fifteen years gave You time for more than training. The estate grew with him. Its library filled with histories, magical theory, old chronicles, maps, translations, records of Heroes and Demon Kings, studies of the System, and copies of prophecies gathered from Rosemont and lands beyond it. Beside the library grew something far less conventional. Using ideas remembered from Earth and principles discovered through magic, You built a laboratory around enchanted crystals capable of storing, organizing, searching, and comparing information. Books provided the records. The crystal system helped compare them. Why had You actually been summoned? Rosemont's answer had always been simple: Too early. The deeper the collection became, however, the less simple the old prophecies appeared. Different kingdoms preserved different words. Different cultures remembered different details. Translations disagreed. Historians argued. Religious traditions sometimes added meanings that older records did not share. No single text contained the answer. The laboratory could compare what You had collected, but it could not turn missing evidence into truth. After fifteen years, the original question remained open. Perhaps the ritual had happened too early. Perhaps Rosemont had misunderstood what it was meant to summon. THE WORLD CHANGES Life at the estate remained quiet. Beyond its walls, however, something had changed. Rumors traveled the roads. Old histories were opened again. Scholars, adventurers, rulers, priests, and ordinary travelers began speaking two titles that had not mattered during You's long years of solitude. A new Hero had emerged. And somewhere else in the world, a Demon King had arisen. The System had given them titles. People immediately began deciding what those titles were supposed to mean. Kingdoms remembered old Heroes. Demon nations remembered old Demon Kings. Scholars returned to prophecy. Rulers considered alliances and threats. But a title revealed remarkably little about the person carrying it. The System could name something. That did not mean people understood what the name meant. The Hero and Demon King were strangers to one another. Neither knew the forgotten summoned Hero living quietly on his estate. And neither yet knew whether the old mystery surrounding You's summoning had anything to do with the changing world. ROADS CONVERGE For fifteen years, You's estate had stood apart from most of the world's affairs. That was about to become more difficult. A traveling swordswoman and her mage companion had wandered farther from their intended road than planned. Elsewhere nearby, another swordswoman and her scout companion were following questions of their own. The two pairs did not know one another. Neither was searching for a forgotten Hero. Neither was looking for a master. And neither knew what the other pair carried with them. Four travelers. Two hidden titles. One unanswered summoning. Their roads were about to meet at the quiet estate of a man the world had mostly forgotten. THE NEXT CHAPTER BEGINS Fifteen years ago, the world summoned You for a reason no one could explain. Now the world may finally be ready to provide the missing pieces.
Opening scene
Morning settled quietly over the estate. Beyond the stone walls surrounding the property, the countryside rolled toward Rosemont in long green hills. The distant city was little more than pale stone against the mountains, far enough away that its bells reached the estate only when the wind was favorable. The training yard showed the marks of years rather than neglect. Wooden posts had been replaced more times than their bases suggested. Stone targets bore cuts too clean to have come from ordinary weapons. Several pieces of training equipment had been rebuilt so many times that their original purpose was difficult to guess. Nothing about the place announced that a Hero lived here. That suited Rosemont just fine. Most people who remembered the summoning at all remembered it as an odd historical footnote. The kingdom had performed an ancient ritual, brought a Hero into the world, discovered there was nothing for him to save, and eventually moved on. Recently, however, the roads had become busier. Merchants carried rumors alongside their goods. Adventurers lingered longer at taverns. Messengers traveled between cities with sealed documents tucked beneath their coats. Two old titles had begun appearing more often. **Hero.** **Demon King.** After fifteen quiet years, history seemed to have remembered them again. But beyond Rosemont, the morning remained peaceful. Until voices drifted along the road outside the estate. “I'm telling you, this road wasn't on the map.” “Then perhaps stop insisting you know where you're going.” “That happened once.” “Three times.” A pause. “Those other two were interpretive disagreements with the map.” The voices drew closer before stopping beyond the estate's closed gate. Paper rustled. “...That might be a house.” “Excellent observation.” “I meant an occupied house.” “That remains to be seen.” Neither traveler crossed onto the property. A few moments later, three deliberate knocks sounded against the gate. Then another sound carried from farther down the road. Footsteps. The first pair fell quiet. Two women were approaching from the opposite direction. One carried a folded map, worn enough along its creases to suggest it had been opened and closed many times that morning. Their attention settled on the estate beyond the gate. “At least this matches the description.” “Finally.” The first woman looked from the stone wall to the road behind them. “Assuming the directions weren't fifteen years out of date.” “They got us this far.” For several seconds, the secluded road held two lost travelers, two travelers who had apparently been looking for this place, a closed gate, and the distant silhouette of Rosemont beneath the mountains.
