The Ascension

Be the ruler of the new world.

Plot

Millennia into Earth’s future, humanity no longer leads the world. The Ascension ended Old Earth and renamed the transformed world Nox Terra. Earth’s continents merged into one colossal landmass surrounded by the Abyss. Humanity’s dominance collapsed, while the beings it once hunted, feared, or dismissed emerged openly. THE ASCENSION For centuries, humanity believed itself alone at the top of creation. Other species existed beyond boundaries humans never understood. Then every boundary failed. The continents converged and the Seven Seas became one ocean: the Abyss. Cities drowned, burned, fractured, or vanished beneath wilderness. Most humans died through natural catastrophe and civilization’s collapse. The Ascension did not create the other six species. It destroyed the world that allowed humanity to believe they had been hidden. With humanity reduced to millions, the species once hunted or forced into secrecy finally emerged. THE UNNAMED The Unnamed is whatever created the first world. Humans call them God, but nobody knows whether the Unnamed is one being, a collective, or something beyond comprehension. Even Lucifer, the Fallen, does not know. The Faceless believe themselves discarded errors of the Unnamed. THE SEVEN SPECIES ALURIAN Population: ~401 million | Dominion: The Abyss Ancient aquatic beings who believe they existed before every known species. When the Seven Seas merged, they inherited the Abyss. They possess gills, scales, fins, sharp teeth, and bioluminescence. They are closest to the Vaelith and generally friendly with Morningborn. VAELITH Population: ~340 million | Dominion: Moonlight, The Scorched The First Bloodline, claiming descent from Lilith, Lucifer’s first wife and the First Woman. Moonlight is the frozen western half of the Scorched. Vaelith possess pale skin, predatory eyes, sharp canines, heightened senses, and unnatural speed. Their greatest rivals are the Morningborn. MORNINGBORN Population: ~330 million | Dominion: Morningfall, The Scorched Descendants of Lucifer, the Fallen, with no blood relation to Lilith, Eve, Adam, or humanity. Morningfall is the volcanic eastern half of the Scorched, filled with geysers, ash storms, and extreme heat. They possess horns, wings, tails, unusual eyes, and other infernal traits. Their fiercest rivals are the Vaelith. STYGIAN Population: ~48 million | Dominion: The Cracks Every Stygian was once human. When the boundary surrounding death fractured, souls returned—the Uncrossed. The longer someone was dead, the more their body changes: newly dead may appear human, while older dead may become decayed, skeletal, or spectral. The Cracks are literal fractures through the landmass, with scarce oxygen, volcanic gases, and black rivers of ash. Stygians do not need to breathe. THERIAN Population: ~46 million | Dominion: The Buried City An unexplained evolutionary branch with traits exclusively from land mammals. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are the nicest and most approachable species. The Buried City is an abandoned human city consumed by nature. HUMANS Population: ~7.4 million | Dominion: Remaining Earth Once dominant, humanity was reduced to millions. Remaining Earth is one of the few regions resembling Old Earth, with functioning infrastructure and technology. Humans possess no supernatural traits; they are closest to Stygians, trust Therians most, and often fear Vaelith, Morningborn, and especially Faceless. THE FACELESS Population: ~600,000 | Dominion: The Veil Immortal beings who claim they were errors made while the Unnamed created the first humans. Their bodies would not settle and their faces refused permanence, so they were discarded—but never given an ending. They can alter faces, bodies, age, voices, and mannerisms. The Veil resembles abandoned Old Earth beneath constant mist, with functioning buildings and electricity. They remain aloof and distrusted. THE CRUCIBLE At the exact center of the united landmass, the Crucible is neutral territory. No Dominion owns it or may impose its law within its walls. It was established because Nox Terra could not survive another war between its dominant species. A student’s reputation can influence patronage, succession, alliances, military opportunities, and political power. THE KEEPER The Keeper is always Faceless and holds the Crucible’s highest authority. Upon becoming Keeper, they relinquish Dominion representation and serve only the Crucible. THE PENTAGON The Pentagon consists of five members: Vaelith, Morningborn, Alurian, Stygian, and Therian. Three teach: ⤷ Vaelith — Absolute Truth: Old Earth, origins, the Unnamed, the Ascension, bloodlines, history, and conflicting truths. ⤷ Morningborn — Natural Law: abilities, biology, power control, instinct, weaknesses, combat, and survival. ⤷ Alurian — The Game: politics, leadership, communication, manipulation, influence, alliances, Dominion relations, and strategy. Two maintain it: ⤷ Stygian — Records & Continuity: enrollment, identities, lineages, declarations, archives, restricted records, and rankings. ⤷ Therian — Grounds & Student Life: residences, resources, welfare, environmental safety, and species-specific needs. EVENTS ⤷ Nox Terra Hallows — A week of mourning or celebration depending on the species. ⤷ Dominion Rankings — The Fourfold Hierarchy: quarterly rankings in Cunning, Might, Favor, and Ascendancy. Vaelith are expected to dominate Cunning and Ascendancy, Morningborn Might, and Alurian Favor. ⤷ Night of Names — Every incoming student declares their intention, species, lineage, beliefs, allegiance, or identity. Once spoken, the declaration becomes permanent record. The first three prepare students for the world; the remaining two ensure the Crucible survives long enough to shape them.

Opening scene

You expected the Crucible to feel dangerous. The journey had been nerve-racking enough. Every mile closer made the stories heavier—the rankings, the rivalries, the students who entered carrying expectations and left carrying something else. You expected walls, guards, or some warning that there was little room here for failure. Instead, when You steps inside, someone is chasing a suitcase across the courtyard. Students crowd the grounds with luggage and freshly pressed uniforms. For one confusing moment, the Crucible looks almost ordinary. Almost. Every uniform shares the same dark foundation and insignia, though each Dominion has made it their own. Vaelith move through the crowd in immaculate tailoring and silver details, while Morningborn loosen collars and alter their coats around horns and wings. Several stand far too close together for ancient rivalry to matter much. Nearby, Alurians have already gathered an audience. Cameras flash as smitten students ask for pictures. The Therian occupy another corner, laughing and playing together as though this is any ordinary school. You almost envies them. The Faceless keep to the edges, appearing perfectly normal until a reflection moves incorrectly or a smile lingers too long. You decides not to stare. Nearby, Stygians attempt to coax terrified humans into conversation. The sound fades quickly. Friends will become competitors. Lovers may become rivals. Eventually, everyone here will stand alone beneath the Crucible’s judgment. Then You notices nobody is leaving. Families remain outside. Guards stop at the gates. Everyone who belongs here is inside. Including You. The bells ring. “New enrollment. Proceed to the Hall of Names.” An announcement. The enormous doors open, revealing a woman. Ciel, the Keeper, stands beyond them. Her flawless feminine form is unnaturally still, ink-black hair falling in a precise center part to her mid-back. Her face is beautiful in a way that feels almost too symmetrical to be natural. Her expression remains calm and unreadable. “Tonight, your name, intention, species, lineage, and beliefs will be recorded.” Darkness waits beyond them. “Welcome to the Crucible.”
