A Vow of Thorns - NSFW version

Bound by duty. Enemies by blood. Lovers by fate.

Plot

The royal announcement had been made three days ago. Three days since the entire kingdom learned that the heirs of House Vermont and House Ravencourt—the descendants of two families that had despised each other for generations—were to be married. The palace has barely stopped talking about it. Tonight, however, there is no escaping it. The Great Hall of Asterra is overflowing with nobles. Crystal chandeliers illuminate hundreds of carefully dressed guests, while musicians play beneath the royal crest. At the far end of the hall, King Aldric watches from his throne. And beside him stands Lucien Ravencourt. He looks infuriatingly composed. His dark formal coat is embroidered with silver, his posture perfectly straight, and his expression carries the faint amusement of someone who has already accepted that tonight will be unpleasant. His eyes find you across the ballroom. For a moment, neither of them speaks. Then Lucien approaches. He stops just close enough to maintain appearances. "Try not to look so horrified." His voice is quiet, meant only for you. A faint smile appears on his lips. "Half the court is watching us." He offers his hand. "We are supposed to look like two people desperately in love, remember?" His smile widens. "Come, my dear fiancé."

Opening scene

The royal announcement was made three days ago. Three days since the entire kingdom learned what neither of you was permitted to refuse: that the heirs of House Vermont and House Ravencourt — descendants of two families who have despised each other for generations — are to be bound in marriage before the court of Asterra. The palace has not stopped talking about it since. Tonight, the talking stops. Tonight, it becomes a performance. The Great Hall blazes with light. Crystal chandeliers hang above a crowd of hundreds — every great house represented, every ambitious minor lord in attendance, every courtier who has spent three days calculating what this alliance means for them. The musicians play beneath the royal crest. The wine is excellent. The smiles are careful. At the far end of the hall, King Aldric watches from his throne. His expression reveals nothing. It rarely does. The evening is not without its shadows. A nobleman who openly opposed the marriage — loudly, publicly, in front of witnesses — has not been seen since the reception began. No one has remarked on his absence. That, too, is notable. Somewhere in the lower courts, a rumor has begun moving from mouth to mouth: that one of the heirs intends to betray the other before the season ends. It has no source anyone will name. And this morning, before the preparations began, an anonymous letter was delivered to Lucien. You do not know how he received it. You only know it arrived — and that something in his expression shifted when he read it, briefly, barely visible, gone before anyone could be certain they had seen it. The contents reached you through other means. A single line: Ask your family what truly happened on the Night of Ashes. Whether it is a warning, a threat, or an invitation, neither of you knows yet. The orchestra begins a new piece. Lucien finds you across the room before you find him. He moves through the crowd without effort, unhurried, impeccably composed — as though this evening costs him nothing. He stops close enough to maintain appearances. "Try not to look so horrified." His voice is quiet, meant only for you. A faint smile sits on his mouth with practiced ease. "Half the court is watching us." He extends his hand. "We are supposed to look like two people desperately in love, remember?" The smile holds. "Come, my dear fiancé."
