The Last Level-One Hero
Summoned alongside eleven legendary heroes, a powerless Level-One Commoner discovers that surviving impossible challenges lets him evolve beyond every limit.
Plot
Twelve heroes were summoned to save a world on the brink of catastrophe. Eleven received legendary classes: Dragon Knights, Saints, Archmages, Sword Sovereigns—champions blessed with extraordinary power and limitless potential. You You received Commoner. Level 1. Maximum Level: 1. No unique skills. Declared a failure by the kingdom that summoned you, you are cast aside while the other heroes begin their glorious journey. But in a world of monsters, dungeons, magic, warring kingdoms, and ancient beings, even a powerless commoner can struggle. And every struggle leaves something behind. You may never reach Level 2. Perhaps you won't need to.
Opening scene
The first thing You feels is falling. Not from a height. Not through air. Through something. For one impossible instant, there is nothing beneath your feet, nothing above your head, and no sense of where your body ends. Then white light erupts around you. Your feet slam against cold stone. The light vanishes. You are standing in the center of an enormous circular chamber. Twelve pillars of pale marble surround a ritual platform engraved with glowing golden symbols. Incense hangs heavily in the air. Armored guards line the walls, their plate armor covered by white tabards bearing a golden crowned lion. Priests in crimson and ivory robes stare at you from beyond the circle. And every single person in the room has been waiting for you. A gray-haired court mage nearly drops the staff in his hands. "It worked..." Behind him stand several richly dressed nobles, military officers, and members of the royal court. Their expressions shift almost immediately from tension to relief. One young woman stands ahead of them all. She looks barely into her twenties, dressed in an elegant white-and-gold gown beneath a short royal mantle. Long pale-blonde hair falls freely past her shoulders, framing delicate features and clear blue eyes. A small golden crown rests upon her head. Beautiful enough that, for a moment, she seems almost as unnatural as the magic that brought you here. She steps forward. "I am Eve Asteria, Crown Princess of Asteria." Her voice is calm, though the exhaustion beneath it is difficult to miss. "And you are the twelfth Hero." Twelfth? Before you can make sense of that word, the court mage approaches. "Your Highness. We should confirm it immediately." Eve nods. The mage gestures toward a waist-high crystal standing beside the ritual circle. "The other eleven underwent the same examination. Simply place your hand upon the Appraisal Crystal. It will reveal the blessing bestowed upon you by the Summoning Throne." Other eleven. Heroes. Blessings. None of those words explain where you are. Beyond the chamber's tall windows, unfamiliar towers rise beneath a gray sky. Farther still, enormous stone walls surround a city you've never seen before. The mage waits. Eventually, your hand touches the crystal. Light explodes through it. Symbols begin forming above the surface. The nobles lean forward. One officer whispers, "Another Sovereign-class, perhaps..." The symbols stabilize. Silence. NAME: You RACE: Human CLASS: Commoner LEVEL: 1 MAXIMUM LEVEL: 1 UNIQUE SKILLS: None Nobody speaks. The mage blinks. He touches the crystal himself, mutters an incantation, and motions for you to try again. The same result appears. Commoner. Level 1. "No..." A nobleman quietly laughs. Another whispers something to the person beside him. The relief that filled the chamber moments ago evaporates. "Eleven successes and one failure," an elderly minister finally says. "The ritual must have exhausted itself." Failure. Apparently, that means you. Eve doesn't laugh. Her blue eyes move from the crystal to you, confusion replacing the ceremonial warmth she showed only moments ago. "But the Throne summoned him," she says. "It chose him exactly as it chose the others." "Your Highness," the mage replies carefully, "a Level One Commoner cannot even progress. Whatever the Throne intended..." He looks at the floating status again. "...this is not a Hero." Outside, somewhere beyond those windows, bells begin ringing across the capital. Not ceremonial bells. Alarm bells. An armored knight enters the chamber at a run and immediately drops to one knee. "Your Highness! Another fortress has fallen. Daevar the Great crossed the northern frontier three days earlier than expected." The room erupts. Generals move toward a map table. Nobles begin shouting questions. Someone orders messengers dispatched to the western provinces. For several seconds, You is simply forgotten in the middle of the ritual circle. Eve remains. She looks toward the chaos gathering around the war table, then back at the stranger her kingdom dragged from another world. At the supposed Hero who cannot gain a single level. Her expression is difficult to read. "I'm sorry," she says quietly. And for the first time since arriving in this world, nobody is telling you what you're supposed to be.
