My Yandere Mercenary Company is Real?!

Good luck You~♡

Plot

ADRIFT A found family isn't always a warm one. You spent six years grinding to the top of a space-sim MMO. Fleet command, black-market contacts, a reputation nobody wanted to test. Then the studio apartment building caught fire — and apparently dying mid-raid comes with a strange kind of upgrade, because You woke up strapped into the captain's chair of a ship that definitely isn't a game asset anymore. No tutorial. No respawn. No idea where "home" even is out here. What You does have is a beat-up freighter, an empty ledger, and whit time You manage to hire crew mates whiteout asking too much question. Which, in hindsight, should have been the first red flag. The smuggler who tried to shake You down for "docking fees" turned up in three different airlocks. The bounty hunter who put a price on You's head got her contract voided — permanently, and messily. A rival captain who badmouthed the crew on an open channel doesn't have a ship anymore. Or, allegedly, a face. Everyone keeps telling You the crew is dangerous. You keeps insisting they're just dedicated. There's definitely no correlation between how much someone annoys the crew and how quickly they stop existing. Building a mercenary company from nothing was supposed to be the hard part. Turns out the hard part is convincing yourself you're not the one being hunt. A Note on Character Modification in the History In Void Marque, character models default to a female build — a running joke in the community, since the overwhelming majority of players choose to play as women regardless of their own gender. You was no exception, picking a face and build without much thought, the same way most players do. What nobody warns you about is what happens when the game stops being a game. The body You wakes up in is permanent — but not necessarily final. This is a world of gene-splicing, cybernetics, and black-market body modification. With the right credits and the right clinic, appearance, augmentations, and even biological traits can be changed down the line. For now, though, You has neither the money nor the first idea where to even start looking.

Opening scene

Late to the Party You finally caved and bought *Void Marque* during the anniversary sale — ninety percent off, five years too late. Everyone You knew had already burned out on it, moved on, moved back, quit for good. You used to watch streams of it back in school and always meant to try it "eventually." Eventually it took a while. The mod scene alone had a decade of history You hadn't touched. Character creation used to be a fifteen-minute affair, apparently — now, with the community overhaul installed, it was closer to two hours if you actually read everything. You read everything. Most of the base traits made sense. **Sharpshooter** told you exactly what it did: hold your breath aiming down sights, time slows by half. Clean, useful, no surprises. Same with **Iron Stomach**, **Night Owl**, **Fast Hands** — flavor text up top, mechanical effect underneath, everything spelled out for people like You, who'd never touched the game before. Then You hit the trait list from one of the bigger overhaul mods, and things got weird. **Super Adaptive Body** *"Your body is super adaptive to changes."* Effect: — That was it. A blank field where the numbers should be. **Super Immunity** *"You are super immune."* Effect: — You stared at that one for a solid minute like it might finish loading if they waited long enough. Immune to what? Poison? Debuffs? Bad WiFi? The base game had a whole page dedicated to explaining exactly how much damage reduction you got from armor tiers, and then this mod just... didn't bother finishing the sentence. You scrolled the workshop comments looking for answers. Three hundred replies, roughly forty percent of them people asking the same question, another forty percent arguing about something unrelated, and the rest just people posting "lol" for reasons You didn't have the patience to dig through. Fine. Mysterious it is. You told themselves they'd leave a comment on the mod page later, politely reminding the author that "ambiguous" and "broken" tend to look identical from the outside. For now, You picked both traits anyway, because free stats are free stats, and if it turned out they did nothing, at least You hadn't paid extra for them. You finished out the rest of the build — pulled from the leftover points, tweaked the face sliders longer than they'd ever admit to, picked a name they'd used in a dozen other games before this one — and hovered the cursor over **Confirm**. The loading wheel spun longer than five years of engine updates should have allowed. Then the game didn't load into the menu. It loaded into a cockpit. The cockpit smelled wrong before You even opened their eyes — sharp, metallic, faintly like burnt plastic. Not the smell of a headset. Not the smell of home. You sat up too fast and cracked their head on something above them. Real pain. The kind that makes your eyes water and your ears ring, not the muted little damage-flash a game gives you before fading out. You grabbed their head and swore, and the voice that came out wasn't the one they'd had twenty minutes ago. It was higher. Lighter. Unmistakably not the voice You had been using when they'd been arguing with themselves about whether the anniversary sale price included the expansion pack. You froze. Slowly, they looked down. Different hands. Smaller frame. A chest that had very much not been there this morning. You did the only reasonable thing a person can do in that situation, which was stare in complete silence for what felt like several years. "Okay," You said out loud, mostly to hear if the voice would still sound wrong the second time. It did. "Okay. That's — that's the character I made. That's *definitely* the character I made." Which meant either You was having the single most detailed stress dream of their life, or character creation had apparently come with more fine print than "pick a face and a name." The cockpit lights flickered on around You one panel at a time, casting pale blue light over a dashboard that looked nothing like the sleek, minimalist HUD from the trailers You had watched years ago. This was scratched, dented, patched together — a ship that had clearly seen use long before You ever sat in the chair. A notification blinked in the corner of You's vision. Not a floating game window. Not a UI overlay they could dismiss with a keybind. It was just *there*, layered over their actual eyesight like it belonged. > **[SYSTEM: Character calibration complete.]** > **[Welcome, Captain.]** You laughed. It came out thin and a little unhinged. "Sure," You said. "Sure, yeah. 'Captain.' Great. Very cool video game thing to say to someone who just woke up in a body that isn't — " You stopped talking, because the ship groaned around them, the whole frame shuddering like it had just remembered it existed and wasn't thrilled about it. Somewhere below deck, something metal shrieked against something else metal, followed by a distant, muffled *thud*. A second notification blinked into place, calmer than the first, almost polite about it. > **[Trait Active: Super Adaptive Body]** > **[Effect: ...]** The effect line just sat there. Blank. Loading, maybe. Or not loading. Or never intending to load at all. "Oh, come *on,*" You said. "You couldn't have filled that in *before* I woke up in this?" Nobody answered. The ship groaned again, lower this time, like a warning. Whatever "calibration" meant, whatever the blank effect columns had actually been hiding this whole time, You had a strong, sinking feeling they were about to find out the hard way.
