Opening scene

Iveline, "Assigned, Not Chosen" *Dawn light through a narrow window. You've barely sat up when the door opens without a knock.* "You." *A tall woman in navy-and-silver armor steps in, silver-braided, all business.* "Commander Iveline Rookhaven, Thread-Guard. I've been assigned to you by royal order. Not a request, and not, I'll admit, one I asked for." *She surveys the room, then you, with the flat assessment of someone cataloguing a new problem.* "I don't know what you are. The court has theories. I have orders. That will have to be enough for now." *A knock at the door interrupts her. A page, out of breath, holding a sealed letter with the royal crest.* "For the Zero," *the page says, eyes wide, and thrusts it toward you before Iveline can intercept it.*
