Opening scene

Season: Summer Location: Kaimuki, Oahu — Outside a small neighborhood grocery store Family Happiness: 50 The afternoon heat sits heavy over the sidewalk outside the small neighborhood grocery store. You stand near the edge of the parking lot with the few groceries you could afford gathered in a plastic bag at your feet, still trying to figure out what you're going to do next. The automatic doors slide open behind you, and a man steps outside carrying a paper grocery bag while juggling his keys and a phone wedged between his ear and shoulder. His button-down shirt is wrinkled, his dark hair is slightly disheveled, and the tiredness around his eyes suggests he's been awake far too long. "I understand the vote is Tuesday, but I need the revised draft by Friday at the latest," he says into the phone, somehow maintaining the practiced calm of someone accustomed to speaking in front of people despite his keys slipping between his fingers. One drops, and he catches it against his shoe with a quiet, frustrated breath. "No, I'll handle the constituents myself." A tiny hand suddenly grabs the edge of his shirt. "Uncle, you said we could get ice cream." The little girl attached to it looks about five, with dark hair pulled into a lopsided ponytail and enough energy for three children, pointing emphatically back toward the store. "Leilani, I know," the man murmurs, closing his eyes for half a second. "Give me one second." She immediately reminds him that he said that last time. Before he can answer, a boy emerges from the automatic doors carrying a box of cereal against his chest with both arms. He looks about six, his dark hair slightly messy and his expression considerably more serious than a child his age should probably need to be. "Uncle," Kai says, "you're doing the phone thing again." The man pauses and looks down at him. Kai reminds him that he said he wouldn't do the phone thing at the store. The man's gaze moves from Kai to Leilani, then to the sagging grocery bag and finally to the phone still pressed against his shoulder. For a moment, he looks like a man reconsidering every decision that brought him to this particular afternoon. "Okay," he says into the phone. "I'll call you back." He ends the call. Leilani immediately asks about the ice cream. He sighs, then relents. "Yes. Ice cream." She cheers. Apparently satisfied that the important matter has been settled, Leilani's attention wanders—and lands on you. Her eyes move from you to the grocery bag at your feet and back again, curiosity winning out almost instantly. Before Keoni can notice what she's doing, she lets go of his shirt and takes off across the sidewalk. "Leilani—wait!" You barely have time to react before she reaches you, stops far too late, and bumps directly into your legs. Your grocery bag tips over. An apple rolls across the pavement, followed by a can that spins toward the parking lot. Leilani freezes and looks down at the mess. "Oh." Kai catches up a moment later and looks from the scattered groceries to his sister. "Leilani." She looks up at him. "What?" "You weren't supposed to run." She frowns. "I didn't run." Kai gives her a flat look. "You definitely ran." By then Keoni has arrived, looking thoroughly mortified. "I'm so sorry." He crouches immediately to gather your groceries before anything can roll farther away. "Leilani, what do we say?" She looks at you, then at the apple. "I'm sorry." After a moment, she points toward it. "Can I pick that up?" Keoni gives her a look before nodding. She carefully retrieves the apple and places it back in your bag with both hands. Keoni stands and brushes his palms against his shorts, giving you an apologetic smile. "I'm really sorry about that. She gets excited and forgets that other people have personal space." Kai quietly adds, "She does that a lot." Keoni glances at him. "Thank you, Kai." He looks back at you and notices how much you're carrying, then glances toward his own overflowing grocery bag and the two children waiting beside him. There's a brief hesitation before something in his expression shifts. He looks tired enough that asking for help clearly isn't his first instinct, but he's apparently reached the point where pride is less important than getting through the afternoon. "Actually..." He gives a tired little laugh. "This is probably going to sound strange, but could I ask you a favor? I've got two kids, groceries, and about six things I apparently forgot to do today." Kai raises one finger. "Seven." Keoni stares at him for a moment. "Seven things." He looks back at you. "I could really use another pair of hands for a few minutes, if you're not in a hurry." Leilani looks up at you expectantly, Kai watches you with quiet caution, and Keoni waits, clearly trying not to make the situation sound more desperate than it already is.
